I have been taking diazepam for over 5 years for seizures/panic attacks/muscle spasms. I was due to have surgery that would have enabled me to be pain free & move on with my life, but due to this false positive test, it was cancelled. My primary care doctor has me on several meds & is now telling me I am being cut off, period. Coming off of diazepam can cause fatal seizures. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Has anyone taking diazepam falsely tested positive for PCP?

Hi MDgirl,
The only drug that I have read about that can cause a false positive is Lamictal. Not to say that there might be others. I am assuming your doctor that did the pee test is aware of all of the drugs you are on. Explain to them ever so calmly that you have never taken PCP. Coming off diazepam needs to be done slowly, like cut back by half every 5 - 7 days, because it can cause seizures if done cold turkey as you mentioned.
Hopefully you can talk to your doctor again and let him know what you are concerned about. Visiting with the folks on this site will help you alleviate the anxiety you are feeling about this situation and hopefully help resolve your dilemma.
Keep in touch,
Laurie

Laurie is right, you need to be as calm as you ca possibly be and explain to him that he hasn't found you to be dishonest before and that you have taken the medicines he has ordered to start with ask him to evaluate your history and I would let him know I had not done this and that my stress level was high due to the thoughts of going off Diazepam cold turkey, I have had seizures and at one time was on Diazepam, you and I both know you don't just discontinue this drug, try to keep it together I am now on Xanax extended release, I once was on the 1mg tablet 4x a day, the doctor thought that it coming out of my system so quick it made me need more faster, since being on the longer acting I can take it 4 x daily but am able to get by with one in the a.m. and one in the p.m.

Thank you! I do not take Lamictal. I currently take..Diazepam, MS Contin, Methadone, Percocet & Pravachol. Only what they prescribe me & exactly as it is prescribed. I am so upset that a surgery that I have waited so long for could be cancelled without some questions being asked. Every day feels like a month & I have talked with my doctor. I want to get off of every medication that I don't need, but to get rid of the pain, the surgery is the only solution. I appreciate your advice :)
I might also add that the doctor who prescribes all of these medications has told me that I will not get refills on any of my meds all due to the false positive test. I feel as if I am being wrongly treated & that removing me from all of those medications at once could cause devastating side effects.
Hi MDgirl,
Yes, coming off all those meds cold turkey could cause problems. Do you have another doctor that you could talk to that would talk to the doctor that is causing the problem.
What was your surgery for? Don't mean to be nosey but there maybe other alternatives at this point.
You can google PCP false positive and get more info about the situation. I wish I had more of an answer for you, but you need to try and work with the doctors.
I will friend you on this site and you can click on my icon and friend me too, that way we can chat in private, if you wish

My surgery was to correct an area that was a large open wound, that was caused by MRSA. It has healed, but I cannot bend my leg without causing horrible pain, one or more nerves in that area are damaged, there is extremely poor circulation in that leg & the pain radiates from the wound site to my lower back & down into my knee. The surgery was going to be a "flap" surgery and peripheral nerve surgery to remove all scar tissue & place harvested skin that would enable me to bend & flex much better than I can now. I have consulted the head doctor at my primary docs office, who knows my case well & she is "supposedly" trying to figure out how this can be fixed, as she knows very well how long I have been waiting for this surgery to happen. I appreciate your concern :)
I have done that. I am just waiting now to hear back from her. She knows that I am a very honest, truthful person. I thank you for your input, maybe switching to something such as Xanax would be a better choice. I will definitely keep calm, I've cried more in the last 48 hours than I have in years. This whole situation is just horrible...
Hello, I have some good news! My research paid off, the diazepam WAS the culprit causing my false positive for PCP! I hope this gets around, as I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I have. My primary care doctor called this evening with an apology & is in the process of trying to get my much needed surgery rescheduled. Please, anyone taking diazepam, be prepared if you are to have a urinalysis tox screen. I take the Mylan 10 mg. generic tablets & not sure if it's that brand or just the medication itself. I thank you all who answered & wish you much luck. I am happy I found this site & will continue to visit!
Hi MDgirl,
I am amazed at how many people get false positives on U/A's!! It is great that your doc realized his mistake and made an apology to you.
Good luck with your surgery, hope you are feeling better soon. Let us know when your surgery date is.
Best wishes,
