Hi Adeline,
I hate to answer your question this way, but no I haven't. I did however, in the past suffer from frequent bladder infections, if you try Azo Standard (tis over the counter) it MAY prevent uti's.
Have you seen a Urologist yet? I was disagnosed with "Busy Girl Syndrome"... I am not kidding, that is what it's called!!! It just means one is too "busy" to go to the bathroom while at work, and truly empty one's bladder.
Anyway, my point is, try the Azo, it turns urine a bright orange, so don't wear your lovely undies when you take it, it worked for me !!
Wishing you the best, and let us know how it turns out,
ElizaJane, Thankyou for all your info, I will check out the diet. I did ask all my Dr.'s if i could have IC, and they said no, every culture comes back with bacteria, and sometimes it is two different ones at the same time, which then i have to take two different antibiotics, that has only happened twice, but that was horrible. I am getting worried that I will build up a resistance to the antibiotics and then nothing will work. Thanks again, Adeline
I would be concerned about that also Adelaine. Bacteria is becoming more resistant to antibiotics at an alarming rate anyway, and you very well could have that happen to you. What about boosting your overall immune system? I would try go find an herbalist/natural practitioner to help you with that.

Back in December 2010 I was infected by one of those antibiotic resistant hospital infections as a result of having a sytoscopy.
After hospitalization on an IV, I was discharged with a PIC line to enable IV treatments at home with Amikacin. That treatment as ended.
I am currently taking the powder fosfomycin.
The UTI symptoms go away and the sneak back. The recent urine cultures were clear, no infection. However the symptoms keep repeating. When they return I take Monurol, the UTI symptoms clear in a day or two.
I have had no significant side effects, loosens stools but no diarrhea.
I am under the care of an infectious disease doctor at Newton Wellesley Hospital, a PCP and a urologist.
I am seriously considering trying d-mannos as an alternative to Monurol.
Fosfomycin is very expensive and it does not seem end the problem.
Any user comments will be most welcome

Dave, Thankyou for your comment. I had the Monurol filled but haven't tried it yet. I have such a terrible time with the other antibiotics that i have been afraid to try it. I am also going to a Infection Disease Dr. in Michigan. The last 2 years i have had constant UTI's, I was on macrobid for preventative but in new Dr took me off that because she said it is hard on the kidneys, and i do have a problem with kidney stones. They feel my infections are coming from the stones in my kidneys, but my urologist does not agree. Has your Dr. given you and answers as to why you get the infections. I have gone 2 months with no UTI which is the longest in over 2 years. I would be interested what your Dr suggest. I also tried the D-mannose, it didnt work for me, but i know alot of people say it works for them. thankyou for your answer. Adeline
HI ADELINE!! I'm so happy to learn you went two months infection free!! That is fantastic, yet sorry to learn the other treatments did not work.
May I ask you what the name of the infectious disease specialist you saw in Michigan? I live in MI and saw one several years ago, just curious.
I've been wondering how you are doing lately, happy to see your post!!
Lara

Sweetlemon, I have tried it all, 3 Urologists 2 infectious disease dr.'s. I tried the Azo, and i was on a couple different antibiotics for preventative, but nothing is working. I went to the Cleveland Clinic and this Dr. wants me to try this other pill to try, but right now i have an infection and I am on Cipro and the side effects are so bad for me, that I am wondering if this new drug will have the same effects. Thanks, Adeline
Hi again Adeline,
Please forgive me if I posted this twice, the sign in thingy popped up after I'd written this comment... yet again!! IT'S A CONSPIRACY I TELL YE (just kidding)
Let me attempt to do some research on the meds in question, if I cannot find info about them MASO can, the man can find anything!!!
Sorry about my idiotic answer earlier, I didn't realize how horrible you have it!
I did go through many many uti's in my twenties, and the "busy girl syndrome" seemed like a pat answer from a urologist who just could not figure out why I had uti's continually.
May I be so bold as to ask you your age and profession (just a general idea, since this is anonymous) because that may have something to do with why you are getting uti's continuously.
I will be back after my research!
Lara
OK, here is the low down...
Fosfomycin (generic) or Monurol (brand name) is used to treat UTI's (durrrr)
It comes in powder form, which you mix with water, and drink, apparently it is a one time use!
The side effects can include;
diarrhea (fun!) headache, tummy pain or upset, dizziness, weakness, stuff nose/sore throat, mentrual pain (fun again!) back pain, vaginal itching (more fun!!) or discharge, OR no side effects whatsoever!!
If you develop swelling or a rash seek medical attention asap. That is an allergic reaction and not a side effect.
The reviews of this med are quite positive, women seem to love it!
One woman said she had a slight headache, after ingesting it, but tylenol made it go bye bye.
It may take 2 to 3 days to work. But from what I've garnered, it WORKS!!!
Please give it a try, but as with any antibiotic take some probiotics to restore good bacteria to the bowel.
Good luck Adeline, and I hope you are feeling better soon!
Lara
Lara, Thankyou so much for all your info. I have been going through this for over 2 years and it has been ruining my life. I am always on antibiotics so I am never feeling well because of what they do to my stomach.I am 60, but I was always bust with my family and traveling with my friends, but these infections have changed my life, and it really depressing me. I have to wait till I am infection free before I can start that new medication. Can you tell me the site that you read the comment on it. Thank you again so much for your help!! Thankyou, Adeline
Hi Adline,
I've kept journals throughout my life, and I got out the ones from my twenties, and wow! My UTI's really wreaked some serious havoc on my life too!!
If you are on anti-B's all the time I imagine you are suffering from the UTI and the side effects of the anti-B's so life must be a real drag at this point! (make certain you do not get the yeast beast from anti-B's!!! that can burn too!)

Do you drink loads of water? Cranberry? Keep yourself hydrated, and make sure you are bathing often (don't mean to impugn your hygiene here!) but baths helped me a bit. I know that may sound odd, but it seemed to relieve some of the pain, along with the Azo. Have you heard of Urised? That med can really help with the pain and aggravation of UTI's. You have probably tried everything out there, but thought I'd suggest it. There is also a med that turns urine a bright blue (oh so pretty) and it works, yet the name escapes me, but your urologist may know of it.
Keep posting, you need support and friends, you are not alone in this,
Lara
Hi Lara, Yes I have had both pills(that turn urine blue and the orange). I think the side effects from the antibiotics are worse for me then the infection. AND now i just did something so stupid, I am so upset! I took my cipro this morning at 8:30 so I have to wait to hours to take my vitamins, so I thought i took my vitamin but took another Cipro! I called the Pharmacy and they said just skip the one tonight, but I am more concerned that I will be twice as miserable with my stomach today. Can't believe I did that!
Adeline,
Before you start feeling barfy, start eating, and I mean eat a full meal !!
That may stave off some of the side effects of taking two!!!
Good luck,
Lara
Lara, Very Discuraged today. The infectious disease wanted me to take the Cipro for 3 weeks, i did it for 16 days, i was so sick i had to stop it. Went to the Uro Dr. today, he did a urine test and he had to send it out for a culture because it looks like I have another infection! I just stopped the Cipro tuesday! I really dont know where to turn, I have been to so many doctors and no one can help me. I can't believe these infections are ruining my life. Guess Im looking for some miracle cure thats not there. Adeline
Hi Adeline,
Did you try the Fosfomycin? And are you still on the estrogen patch?
Oddly enough, my UTI's stopped the second I became pregnant with my daughter, went nine months without one, it was GREAT!! Have a baby, no more UTI's, well for 9 months anyway... just kidding.
I do agree with EJ on the yeast theory!! Have you been tested for the yeast beast recently? IF you have it, ask your doc for Diflucan, it works great.
No side effects either. There is always acidophilus, which is a natural product and it keeps yeast at bay. It is otc, and can be purchased in tablet form at any pharmacy. PLEASE get tested for yeast, and it can live in ones bladder, as EJ suggested.
Don't lose hope!!! Keep trying for a cure, seek and ye shall find!!
x
Lara
Hi Lara, I couldnt start the Foso yet because you have to be infection free. I am still on Estrogyn. I have been on the Diflucan. I think I have tried and done everything. I am kind of new on here, so I dont know that many of the people on here, and not sure how it works, I hope other people can read comments and maybe someone may have some insight, I just feel like I have tried every avenue, but is there ANY thing I am missing. I feel bad for my family because I just never feel good, and am happy just being home, and that is so unlike my life used to be. AND i am so worried about drug resistance. Thanks for listening! I am tired of talking to my friends and Family about it, I know they feel bad, but sometimes I dont feel they realize how this is effecting me. Adeline
Adeline,
Perhaps you should post a new question about drug resistant UTI's??? Just a suggestion, you may get more answers that way.
There are so many educated, and very compassionate people on this great site, so hang on, and you will meet more of them. Stay with us, so you can make more friends, and get more advice.
That makes NO SENSE to me, you must be infection free to try that new med?
How odd since tis for UTI's!! If I were in your position, I would BEG for that medication!!
I am so sorry that you no longer want to confide in friends and family regarding your condition. But I do understand that you just might feel a wee bit like a burden, is that it? Is that why you are tired of talking to them?
I am a chronic pain sufferer, and I know how one feels complaining to friends and family, they either do not understand or I feel like an eejit complaining about the pain!

Please Adeline, post a new question, reword it, and you may get loads of responses!!! I have several friends on this site that could be of help, let me send some emails, and alert them of your question, let's see if you can get some BIG BRAINS working on this???
Your friend,
Lara
... whoops forgot to add that ElizaJane's idea of IC may be right on the money!!!
I'll be back with the cavalry soon Adeline.
Thank-you so much!!! P.S.The reason they gave me for not being able to go on the Foso till infection free is that it is used as a preventative. I will repost my question.
I sent two emails to some friends, just hang in there, hopefully THE BIG BRAINS are home and will post to you soon!!
I know how miserable you feel, and this mystery needs to be figured out asap.
Tis bringing the quality of your life down.
And you are very welcome to the tiny amount of help I've given, we will wait for the big brains to help you, I've got one or two more emails to send to more of my friends on this site. I will be notified when they answer your questions!!
