Has anyone taken Fosfomycin(Monurol) as a preventative for UTI's?

OK, here is the low down...
Fosfomycin (generic) or Monurol (brand name) is used to treat UTI's (durrrr)
It comes in powder form, which you mix with water, and drink, apparently it is a one time use!
The side effects can include;
diarrhea (fun!) headache, tummy pain or upset, dizziness, weakness, stuff nose/sore throat, mentrual pain (fun again!) back pain, vaginal itching (more fun!!) or discharge, OR no side effects whatsoever!!
If you develop swelling or a rash seek medical attention asap. That is an allergic reaction and not a side effect.
The reviews of this med are quite positive, women seem to love it!
One woman said she had a slight headache, after ingesting it, but tylenol made it go bye bye.
It may take 2 to 3 days to work. But from what I've garnered, it WORKS!!!
Please give it a try, but as with any antibiotic take some probiotics to restore good bacteria to the bowel.

Lara, Thankyou so much for all your info. I have been going through this for over 2 years and it has been ruining my life. I am always on antibiotics so I am never feeling well because of what they do to my stomach.I am 60, but I was always bust with my family and traveling with my friends, but these infections have changed my life, and it really depressing me. I have to wait till I am infection free before I can start that new medication. Can you tell me the site that you read the comment on it. Thank you again so much for your help!! Thankyou, Adeline

Hi Lara, Yes I have had both pills(that turn urine blue and the orange). I think the side effects from the antibiotics are worse for me then the infection. AND now i just did something so stupid, I am so upset! I took my cipro this morning at 8:30 so I have to wait to hours to take my vitamins, so I thought i took my vitamin but took another Cipro! I called the Pharmacy and they said just skip the one tonight, but I am more concerned that I will be twice as miserable with my stomach today. Can't believe I did that!

Before you start feeling barfy, start eating, and I mean eat a full meal !!
That may stave off some of the side effects of taking two!!!

Lara, Very Discuraged today. The infectious disease wanted me to take the Cipro for 3 weeks, i did it for 16 days, i was so sick i had to stop it. Went to the Uro Dr. today, he did a urine test and he had to send it out for a culture because it looks like I have another infection! I just stopped the Cipro tuesday! I really dont know where to turn, I have been to so many doctors and no one can help me. I can't believe these infections are ruining my life. Guess Im looking for some miracle cure thats not there. Did you try the Fosfomycin? And are you still on the estrogen patch?
Oddly enough, my UTI's stopped the second I became pregnant with my daughter, went nine months without one, it was GREAT!! Have a baby, no more UTI's, well for 9 months anyway... just kidding.
I do agree with EJ on the yeast theory!! Have you been tested for the yeast beast recently? IF you have it, ask your doc for Diflucan, it works great.
No side effects either. There is always acidophilus, which is a natural product and it keeps yeast at bay. It is otc, and can be purchased in tablet form at any pharmacy. PLEASE get tested for yeast, and it can live in ones bladder, as EJ suggested.
Don't lose hope!!! Keep trying for a cure, seek and ye shall find!!

Hi Lara, I couldnt start the Foso yet because you have to be infection free. I am still on Estrogyn. I have been on the Diflucan. I think I have tried and done everything. I am kind of new on here, so I dont know that many of the people on here, and not sure how it works, I hope other people can read comments and maybe someone may have some insight, I just feel like I have tried every avenue, but is there ANY thing I am missing. I feel bad for my family because I just never feel good, and am happy just being home, and that is so unlike my life used to be. AND i am so worried about drug resistance.Thanks for listening! I am tired of talking to my friends and Family about it, I know they feel bad, but sometimes I dont feel they realize how this is effecting me. Adeline

ElizaJane, Yes, I have been going to a mineral doctor, because I thought maybe it was my immune system, then the Gyno Dr. thought maybe it was because my estergyn so he put me on a patch.I feel like i have covered every avenue, thats why I am so discouraged. I also do have stones in my kidneys, so they tried to say it was from the stones, but after i went on the patch the infections stopped for 2 months, then they started again, so they ruled out the stones. All they say is that I am a difficult case! In the mean time i have been on antibiotics for 2 years. Just dont know where to turn. Adeline

She didn't want me to try the medication yet. She gave me a prescription to be compounded, then used topically for urethra pain - it contains Baclofen, Amitryptalin, Lidocaine, Testosterone, and another couple of medications. You put it on your urethra 4 times a day. Then she gave me a Valium suppository to use vaginally every night for 30 days, then 3 days a week afterwards. That's supposed to relax the pelvic floor. Hopefully these two compounds, along with continuing the Bladder friendly diet will get this episode of bladder pain to pass. Interestingly enough - you mentioned with your talking about diminishing estrogen - my period has just about quit. Since Thanksgiving I've only had one period. Also, the acne on my face is gone the past two months. I am using Prelief for reflux, along with Omeprezole, and have added Quercetin to my supplements. I'll let you know how it all works out, and you let me know about yourself, ok?

Hi Adeline - yes, I can see your updates to sweetlemon. I can see where your situation would be very frustratinYou've evidently have a bad bug or virus that isnt responding to the antibiotics. A thought: have you gone to a really large hospital, such as Johns Hopkins or the Mayo Clinic, etc? The large regional, or teaching hospitals really thrive on this sort of thing. They see the really hard Cases, such as yours, that the average doctor would never see. Even if you had to travel six or ten hours, it may just be worth it. I'd start with a Urologist, then they can confer with the Immuniology folks. That's very normal there. You are right to be concerned about all the antibiotics and the infection still being there. with MRSA and other bacteria that aren't responding to antiobiotics there is definitely cause for concern. I wish I could offer you more help - I feel a connection with you as we both have "bladder issues" and that is no fun!

Hi ElizaJane, I did go to University of Michigan Hospital, and the Cleveland Clinic, the Dr. at the Cleveland Clinic is the one that wanted me to try the new antibiotic as a preventative, but he wants me to start it when I am infection free, and I havent been for a while. I am getting so stressed when ths started a few years ago, after I would end the meds, it would take one or two weeks to get another one, now its days. I feel like these health issues are all I think about ALL day. I just want a light at the end of the tunnel. I was just on Cipro 500mg twice a day, was suppoed to go 3 weeks but i got to the 16th day, and I had to stop, they were making me so sick, and i couldn't eat, they really kill my stomach. I feel like I have a new support system with you girls on this site, and that really helps to talk to someone that is going through similiar issues. I have great friends, but I just don't think they really understand. Most of the time its the antibiotics that make me sicker then the infection. Thanks again, Adeline

Good morning, That is very interesting about the cultures. He did send a sample out friday, I will be depressed if it is the same bacteria that I had when i was on the Cipro, because you are right, you would think 1000mg a day for 16 days would of killed anything. Yes, I will add you as a friend that would be great, now I just have to figure out how to do that LOL. Hi Lara!!! I am so happy just to be off the antibiotics, but worried everytime I get a twinge LOL How are you doing? I am going to Dr. Johnson at Henry Ford Hospital. About a year ago i went for almost 2 months and then i got a UTI and then it was constant till now, so i am holding my breath to stay this way. It was nice to hear from you! Adeline
