I've been on Topomax for 5 months and I've had the usual side effects (weight loss, memory issues, tingling). I'm currently on 100mg 2x a day. Recently I stopped sweating and my doctor has run every test she could think of to find out why. The only thing she found was that I was diabetic. I go to an endocrinologist next month for the sweating issue. When this first happened I looked up Topomax to check the side effects to make sure decreased sweating wasn't one of them. I didn't find it listed anywhere. I did another search tonight and found that decreased sweating is a side effect. Has anyone experienced this and what did your doctor recommend? Thank you for your help.

Hi Amandalbr, decreased sweating is definitely a known side effect of Topamax, along with decreased drinking and eating. One of the things my prescriber warned me about was remembering to drink enough fluids because I would forget due to the way the medication effects the brain/cns. Some other side effects that you can experience out of the blue are strange tastes and/or smells that don't even exist. Again it depends on how the Topamax is interacting with your various brain areas.
If you are taking it for migraine reduction, I would be interested in how it's working for you. Please let me know.

Thank you, Amie. For some reason my doctor didn't/doesn't know about the decreased sweating side effect or didn't tell me. They told me about every other side effect possible. I do take Topomax for migraine reduction and it has helped tremendously. It's been the only thing to help in 14 years. I noticed the decrease in sweating sometime in June. I had started exercising and trying to lose weight. My husband thought I was dehydrated. I drank extra fluids... nothing helped. I've been back and forth to the dr. since July and just know found this on Topomax. I really don't want to go back to having migraines as frequently I was before (sometime as much as 2-3 a week lasting 1-4 days) but I don't want to cause any damage to my body by overheating from not sweating.

It's listed as one of the side effects you're supposed to notify your doctor about right away. I'm surprised s/he doesn't know about it. Did your regular GP prescribe or a specialist? I don't know about your endo but mine always pushes everything that's not endocrine related back to my GP. I had asked her to run a ferritin, which is part of a normal routine blood test protocol once you've had your thyroid removed (aka, ME) and when I was found to be anemic at 10 she referred me back to my GP for treatment. Ridiculous. Anyway, I love my GP and she is really up to date on so many things.

The Topamax has helped me some. It's cut my migraines by about half but now when I get one my medication doesn't cut it and I am sick for 2-4 days with all the old symptoms of aura, vomitus, dia. . .. and in bed. Imitrex, Axert, dissolving antiemetics and Compazine have absolutely no effect on me anymore. I just had my Imitrex injectables refilled and will see if that helps at next onset but I took 2 of the 100mg pills last time with absolutely no effect, it was so wierd.
Anyway, let me know how you make out at endo and how your migraines go.
