The patent for Ambien CR is not expected to expire until 2020. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend the exclusivity period. This could include such things as other patents for specific Ambien CR uses or lawsuits. Once this medication goes off-patent, several companies may begin manufacturing a generic Ambien CR drug.
