I just wanted to add that before my doctor was going to give me this drug, he gave me IV Benadryle, which I have taken the tablet form before no problems. As soon as he gave me the IV I got a rush feeling that I normally don't like, but this kept going and going and would not stop after 30 minutes I was still feeling bad. Has this happened to anyone else? my doctor decided not to give me the Haloperidol after the reaction I had and to be honest I am so glad he didn't I was really not wanting to try this drug.

I cannot believe your doctor was going to give you Haldol for a migraine. I've never heard of that before. A's a nurse, I've seen Haldol given to patients who are completely out of control in a psych unit and it totally knocks them out for several hours!!I wouldn't recommend it at all. I'm sorry to say, there just isn't any cure for migraines. I've had them for over 30 yrs. I got into trouble big time by taking some very strong narcotics over the years for them. A year ago, after nearly 15 yrs. On a daily regimen of narc pain meds, I stopped taking them cold turkey!! A's a nurse I can say that was a really stupid thing to do!! You need to be weaned off of this type of drugs slowly. Anyhow, after 10 days of feeling like I was going to die, I found a Suboxone clinic and made an appt. A's soon A's I took the first one I started to feel better. I've been on them ever since. now when I get a migraine, the sub helps with the pain.

I was in the ER last month and the idiots decided they would try that instead of my normal meds. BAD IDEA!! I got the fight or flight reaction which is exactly what you are describing... Like you want to crawl out of your skin... It was horrible! They had to give me a Benadryl injection to stop the reaction within 5 minutes of giving me the Haldol. I can't understand why in the world these docs are giving an anti-psych med for migraines... bad bad idea!! It is now a listed allergy for me. Guess thats what happens when you give normal people psych drugs. Good Luck!

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, when this drug was suggested to me I was really worried because I always ask for the drug sheet and read about the drug first and me and the nurse at the time could not find anywhere that it said it was used for migraines, I think we ended up talking to the pharmacy who then showed us that yes it is used sometimes for Migraines. But when this drug was suggested the doctor's were getting reallly frustrated because nothing was working, but the update now is they put me on Metoprolol and although it has taken a couple of months to star helping me, it has made a bit of difference to the Migraines. I must also say when you are the patient you have to really trust the doctor working with you, which I did and when I agreed to take the drug it took me hours to decide. But I am so glad eveything worked out the way it did and I wasn't given the drug. Thanks ukliz.

I'm a emergency physician, so I think I know the ED treatment of migraine pretty well. Haloperidol (Haldol) is actually a great drug for migraines. Not the best, but now because of Reglan and Compazine IV now on national shortage, its really the best we have. Narcotics are very poor treatment (makes you dependent and gives rebound headaches). The studies show once NSAIDS (things like naproxen, ibuprofen) and triptans (like Imitrex, Maxalt) dont work at home within the first 2 hours of onset, then drugs like Compazine is really the best treatment once you come to my ED. Droperidol was once the best, but the FDA put a unfounded black box warning on it, so now Haloperidol (just make sure they give you the Benadryl with it to prevent that crawling out of your skin horrible feeling that happens in ~16% of patients) is really the best. Write your Congressman! these drug shortages are really hurting us (literally).

Thanks for answering, So I tried compazine and it didn't do a great deal for my Migraine. So they gave me Reglan and I have to say it was the worst reaction I have ever had to a drug, as soon as the nurse started to give me the drug I felt it burn my skin, she had the sense to give me only half the dose thank god because if you saw the reaction it had on my body you would of been shocked. Has this happened to any of your patients before, my skin started to sting really bad and you could see my skin go red just like what you get when you are sun burnt. It lasted for several days, also I take the tablet form of Benadryl at home for allergies, and I had a bad reaction to IV Benadryl for the first time which was really awful especially the chest discomfort. So the only thing that has given me any relief from the Migraines is, DHE.

In fact I just came out of hospital this week for the migraine treatment, which was IV Kytril 1mg over 2hours, IV Promethazine 1mg over 3 hours, and IV DHE 1mg over 2hours. I have 3 rounds of this in one 24hr period for a total of 6 rounds. It has taken nearly a year of trying several medications and this combination is the only thing that has given me about a week and a half of some relief from the migraines. I am now waiting for an appointment to try Botox, which also scares me a bit about being injected in several places with this med, I have asked for a test shot in case I am allergic to this also. If only you new what a ruff time I have had since last January you would be amazed I wasn't coming to the ER for treatment several times a month, well I have gone on way too much thanks again, Liz.
