My tremors have increased to the point where they affect my daily life, making it increasingly difficult to eat, bring a glass to my mouth or use common hand tools. My head now also shakes. Dr had prescribed Inderal but I'm hesitant to take another med. Moods have been very stable for yrs now. What to do?

If the tremors are really bothersome then it is best to see your doctor.

Hi Dannban,
I am on Lithium and Manerix. When I started Lithium I was a mess. I had the shakes so bad. I couldn,t sign my name. Forget writting. Yes, I also had trouble holding a glass or cup. It was noticeable. But with time it got better. Now I'm fine. No shakes and this has been the best medicine for me. But I am always thirsty, so I drink alot of water. Hope this helps! Take care.

smileyhappy - my problems are just the opposite of yours. Have been on meds for 29 yrs. now & am becoming progressively worse. My handwriting is horrible. Yes, I'm thisty & drink a lot of water. Believe me, I NEVER want to go back to the person I was pre meds. I have a wonderful outlook on life & am very happy every day. Just wish I could get rid of those shakes (tremors)

The inderal is a beta blocker that is used to treat tremors as well as blood pressure problems. It is important to take as prescribed, no more no less, and drink plenty of water with it. Do not crush or chew as it is a delayed release type med.
Why did the doctor switch you from lithium to depakote? Do you have periods of mania? Was the lithium working? You may need to have your levels checked sooner than May if you are having this much trouble. Your doctor needs to know and will probably want to know whether you are taking the inderal.
Keep in touch and let us know how u are doing,
Laurie
I think I posted my comment on wrong page so here goes.
OK, once again... to repeat & to answer some ??? NO, I do not have any manic or depressive episodes since on Depakote. Have been stable for years now & when I had confided my condition w/a few close friends, they were amazed that I am bipolar. They saw no indication of mood swings. Even my boss was amazed. My wife (a nurse) sees that I am stable. I religiously take my meds !!
Now, why did the Dr. switch me from Lithium to Depakote? Lithium was not too kind to my system & it also gave me tremors. In addition to the Depakote I take 20mg Prozac (which also causes tremors) but I feel as tho Prozac has gone a long way as to my good disposition & my stability.
Glad to know that you are hanging tough. How long before your next visit with the new doc? Did you start the inderal?
Let us know how you progress,
Laurie

Depakote never helped me, I gained lots of weight and it was horrible to get off of. For me, less meds is better and focusing on good nutrition and exercise helps a lot. The less chemicals,'dyes and prepared foods I eat the better I do. Hope this helps you - stick with your gut instinct - you know what is best for you. Perhaps slow things down and try a low amount of Depakote - it is not always necessary to get to a "therapeutic range" to get good effects. Do what your body says is right.

Tremors are classed as a serious side effect of Depakote.
From Dannman - My tremors are REALLY bothersome & getting progressively worse thru the yrs. Drs. only suggest another med & as they all have side effects I'm very hesitant to add to the mix. My next appt. is in May & I would like to suggest cutting my dosage (depending on my blood work) if at all feasable since I've been very stable for years & at 69 yrs. of age my metabolism is not what it once was. Will do nothing w/out Drs. say so & if this is what I have to deal with, then "so be it".
again I know I answered if those tremors don't subside don't allow them to go without calling and informing the doctor of what effects you are having, remember I told you I had taken De (can't think of how to spell it anyway you know what I mean it gave me some rough side effects but as I said before what affects one person won't do the same with others you be safe and don't allow this to continue without talking to the doctor take good care,
Hi, I heard about how to drink more water and it really works that I thought I might share. I am going to go with just lithium due to severe side effects from Lamictal which has cause physical issues that I will have to live with, I tolerate Lithium fine so my Dr. said that if I would be sure to agree to frequent tests and keep up with lots of water we would give it a try. He said it was the gold standard and the only reason I may get into trouble with it would be not keeping up with the tests and adding to my water intake, Just drinking water for whatever reason wasn't working then I saw this show and they talked about how to keep up with water. It works and it is simple. In the morning I fill up a pitcher with the amount of water I need to drink each day and squeeze a lemon to add to the water. It is much more appealing and turned my water drinking around to what it should be. Taking any kind of meds without enough water isn't a good plan especially Lithium.

Water without ice is easier on the system and was recommended. I think we are the only country who are such heavy ice drinkers, it isn't hard to do without ice because the lemon increases your thirst and makes the water taste better.
Now I know how much I have been drinking it is one last thing I need to remember if I have done enough of and it makes me think about it because I take the pitcher with me if I am going to leave one room for awhile or just keep a filled glass that I roam around with.
