Selenium Might Help Treat Symptoms in Graves' Eye Disease
WEDNESDAY, May 18 -- The trace mineral selenium improves quality of life and slows the progression of eye problems in people with the autoimmune disorder known as Graves' disease, a new study says.
Italian researchers report that they compared daily selenium use to both a medication called pentoxifylline and a placebo, and found that selenium could benefit people with Graves' disease with eye involvement, without causing side effects.

Just read the New England Journal of Medicines article on the Italian study that points to selenium as help with the effects of Graves Opthalmalogy. This is awesome news, at last, something to try!!! I only have it in my left eye at this point. At first I thought, good, it's only one eye, I'll still have a good one. Then as my left started bulging I realized how bad it looks when it's only 1 eye. Everyone else I've seen with this it's both eye, at least you match. When 1 eye comes out so far you can't close your lid over it , especially when asleep, you really tend to stand out in a crowd!! Will be going to the vitamin store and trying the selenium. Can't hurt to try since the medical world has no answer except surgical removal of tissue behind the eye so you can close it. Not up for that if I can find a way to avoid it.

I was diagnosed with TED this past September although I think its gone undiagnosed for a long time. I also have a pseudotumor in the lacriminal gland in both eyes. They are like fatty tissues and are benign and inoperable.
I am having eye surgery 11-26 &12-3. My doctor is decompressing my eyeballs so I can close my lids all the way. He did talk about doing radiation but one of the side effects are blindness and I'm not willing to risk it.
I asked my doctor if it were him, what would he do? He said he'd have the surgery, so there was no question what to do.
This may be something you may want to discuss with your opthamologist. I am seeing an ocufacial ophthalmologist who is also a plastic surgeon, he did my first eye surgery years ago. I am not sure where you live but my doctor is in Indianapolis/Carmel In, which is 3 hours south from me.
Good luck
Jen
