Firstly, please do not worry that you have been prescribed an antidepressant. Antidepressants are not only used to treat depression. They have been used to treat many other conditions - including the pain, stiffness and sleep associated with fibromyalgia and many other pain related conditions - for a long time.
Cymbalta is the first antidepressant (and only the second drug) to be actually approved by the FDA for the treatment of fibromyalgia - as it showed great results during the clinical trials. Cymbalta is also used to treat generalized anxiety disorder and diabetic nerve pain as well as depression.
Cymbalta, like most other drugs will have risks and benefits. The benefits are that it has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of fibromyalgia. The "risks" come with the side effects - the most common being nausea, dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, sweating, and decreased appetite. You may or may not experience any of these side effects - it totally depends on the individual. Often people will put up the side effects if they are getting the pain relief.
Yes, there is a suicide warning on Cymbalta along with all other antidepressants - this is an FDA requirement. This warning is the "increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults taking antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD) and other psychiatric disorders."
This warning is for patients under 24 years of age being treated with antidepressants for depression and other psychiatric conditions - not fibromyalgia.
I hope this is of some help. Good luck.
I tried the cymbalta for one week. It was awful!!! I would not recommend this product to anyone who suffers from fibromyalgia. I find that an aspirin does more to control the pain than anything else I have tried. This also includes lyrica which I tried as well. My biggest problem with both products was the sick stomach all the time and lack of appetite. Also had some balance problems.
I've only been taking Cymbalta 60mg for fibromyalgia for two going on three weeks but I noticed an improvement by the end of the first week. Yesterday I almost felt normal and prior to being subscribed Cymbalta I was a mess. Lots of pain, no sleeping. I did get sleepy during the day the first week but I would just lie down for a couple of hours and sleep! I don't have to do that now but I really feel that the quality of my sleep has improved and so has the pain. For what it's worth. I honestly can't get over the high number of side effects and that still makes me nervous.

I am 59 years old and have had fibromyalgia for many years. I was taking cymbalta 30 and was recently upgraded to 60 . it was awful. I felt like a zombie and it did not help the pain at all! I stopped taking it. I am just taking the opana er and ir. I take an arthritic medication and tylenol sometimes as needed. Nothing takes the pain completely away.
Is anything working for you?
My fibromyalgia is due to several feet operations due to club feet. The doctor said I would probably get arthritis in my feet when I got older. It went from arth. to fibro. in my thirties. The fibro was not diagnosed until my forties.
