Thanks friends for all the great input on Vit D3. I am taking 2,000 ui and will wait to talk w/my doctor about taking higher amount. The vitamin levels have become something I have been looking into. I recently learned vitamin B, I am low. When I read the side affects, I had several of them. I'm not so sure that doctors look at theses things close. So easy to just perscribe another drug...

Hi Jfamily,
I too recently had my Vit D levels checked and was below 32 so the doctor recommended Caltrate or OsCal. Anyway, the OsCal I bought has 600 IU per pill and I take two. I think the 10,000 IU's is a bit too much. Overdose symptoms may include headache, weakness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle or bone pain, metallic taste in the mouth, weight loss, itchy skin, changes in heart rate, loss of interest in sex, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior, severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, or fainting. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

Hey J... and Laurie, to answer your question 10,000 is NOT too high for your doctor to put you on if you are low in the vitamin D category. Actually, you can take up to 50,000 IU if you are below the level. This is a relatively new field that doctors are finding since they are pushing the sunscreen so hard. Now people are not laying out in the sun as they used to, and many people are putting sunscreen on their faces to keep it from wrinkling. the downside is that people are losing out on their Vit.D levels, and doctors never thought to check on the opposite problem happening due to sunblock. They thought that fortified mild would make up for it, and your body simply doesn't absorb the Vit.D as well as the sun, therefore the high units when you are low. I'm sure that after you have been on 10,000 IU for a few weeks or even months because it takes that long to absorb the vitamin from a pill, your doctor will take another blood test to see where you are.

Hey! I have Fibromyalgia and Osteopenia and my doctor has me on 2000 units. Never had having to take anything like that I thought that was high. Of course I was assured it wasn't. I was told some people had to take alot higher doses than that, and that I might have to increase mine. Good luck to you!!

Hi, My Neurologist was the one who checked my Vitamin D level, and sure enough it was as low as 17 really low. I was put on 50,000 I.U. for a while then my PCP brought the dose down to soon, and so my Neurologist tested me again and it was at 21 so he put me back up. So now he make the decisions on this issue, so now I take 2,000 I.U. twice a day. My levels are now checked every 3 months routine, I too have Fibromyalgia and I am sure it is safe to take the numbers we have been on especially I trust my Neurologist is prescribing the right thing for me. I would ask for regular checks of your Vitamin levels and that way you too can keep an eye on how your levels are doing. Take care Liz.
Ok all, I wasn't sure where I was to comment so everyone in this conversation gets this. Thanks for all the feed back. I increased the amount of D3 to
D3 2,000 iu. With the help of all the feed back, I don't feel comfortable taking that dose on my own. Thanks so much...
