Explain why sustained release nifedipine was formulated?

Sustained release tablets are often formulated to improve patient compliance.... ie. instead of taking a nifedipeine tablet three times a day, a sustained release tablet can be given just once a day. A patient is far more inclined to take his medicine if he only has to take it once a day instead of 3 times a day.
