Why is there an expiration date on Lidoderm patches? What happens to the drug after that certain amount of time? Is it simply ineffective or does it undergo some chemical transformation which makes it dangerous to use?

Elderly lady has people coming in to apply patch but but not always around 12 hrs later. Plus... patient wants to use it continuously.
