How do I ensure the redivac drain is functioning?

A pt had appendicectomy 2 days ago. A redivac drain was also inserted intra-operativey. He is showing signs of post-operative infection and now requires wound and drain care. But how do I know if the redivac drain is functioning?
*May I ask for the reference name of the site or books? I need to understand the checking of functions in details if possible.

My previous answer, I provided a link so it is up for approval so I just want to say again. Google redivac drain. You will find quite a few sites to choose from. One I particulary liked was put out by AORN.
