My ongologist has prescribed Effexor XR to reduce the hot flashes I get due to taking Tamoxifen. 150mg Effexor XR are helping only a little w/the hot flashes. My questions is: I've never been a depressed person, but since taking Effexor XR I seem to be "blue" or down-spirited alot. Can this be a side-effect of this med? I thought anti-depressants were to make you not depressed.

I am not sure about a drug for hot flashes except some kind of hormone as I am going thru menopause, and that's all they talk about. I will tell you that effexor works good for people that are bi-polar, or for those with a chemical in-balance in the brain. I am not sure about a drug that causes you to be depressed, I have never heard of one.
If you have Cancer or Pre Cancer Hormones are out of the question. If Cancer is in the family stay away from Hormones. This is a study from the Univ. Rochester (great Univ) did this study. I have been taking Gabapentin, and I just thought I finished hot flashes. Since reading this, now I know it was the Gabapentin. I have read some more studys, and they say that it takes between, 7-14 days to really work. Amen...
I had a horrible reaction to Effexor and was given it for the same reason.
I have had no other reaction from Gabapentin other than getting rid of the hot flashes.
