I have chronic lower back pain (degenerative disc disease, sciatica, etc) and have been on Norco and Percocet for a little over a year. I'm taking 4 Norco's and 7 Percocets per day. I need to change to something more effective because this is too much Tylenol for my liver. What do my fellow sufferers recommend? I tried Fentanyl and it gave me severe headaches. Tried MS Contin but it caused terrible itching. What else should I try? My pain doctor seems to be out of ideas. I'd like to hear about Methadone? Any others?

First off, Stay away from Methadone. How long were you on the MS? The itching will usually subside after an adjustment period. It took 2-3 weeks for me. Not really sure where you can go from here.
I only recommend Methadone if you plan on never trying to stop, because that is where the price is paid, and it's a very long process if you've been on it for any length of time. Give the MS another chance, lower dose and longer period than the first time. I see that as your best option. Hope this helps.

Have you tried taking a muscle relaxer ex: flexeril, Soma along with your current meds? I was taking pain pills, lortab 10mg n Percocet 10mg for pain in my back and for chronic kidney stones and ovarian cyst. I took the Soma at night (as prescribed) and found that I wasn't as stiff and in as much pain in the am..just a suggestion. Good luk.

I guess I should also add-that I take 6 to 8 a day now, and with that bring said, Maybe you guys can help me, I'm not ready to ask my pm dr yet, he's a great dr and will have many alternative. I would like just a little knowledge before I go in for my next visit. I'm taking too many a day and they are not effective anymore. I know there are many alternatives out there, anybody have any suggestions:). So after reading yours, I didn't see any real answers. Have tried any of the suggested?

I'd say stay away from Methadone. I think Mscontin with an antihistamine might work. There is also Dilaudid and Opana. But using any of them is taking the heaviest opiates there are. They're much different from Hydrocodone and Oxycodone. Maybe OxyContin can help. That's time released Oxycodone.
I hope you find what works for you.
