Exalon patches only contain the drug rivastigmine, a cholinergic enhancing drug that may prevent the progression of alzheimer's disease. The reason for the patch form is oral rivastigmine can cause a high incidence of nausea and vomiting, the patch prevents this from occuring as often. There have been no head to head studies comparing exelon and aricept, but experts believe that efficacy is similar. I can tell you however that Aricept has been the only drug studied in advanced alzheimer's disease, but that does not mean that it is necessarily better than exelon.
