I just read on the NIH section of RLS that some people may be affected by the use of certain allergy/cold medications containing antihistimines..which Benadryl does. I have used Benadryl for the past two weeks, and have had almost no sleep, and it has not helped the nighttime itchies. Helps during the day however. I am withdrawing use of Benadryl today. Hope this helps.
Sorry to hear about the benadryl problem. Just goes to show what helps some may not help all. Are you getting any sleep yet? I have to take Xanax or I can't sleep at all. it's a miserable cycle. Think my problem is with the fibromyalgia tho' Good luck to you, & hope you get a good nites sleep...
Benedryl (Diphenhydramine) also causes my RLS to go NUTS, even to the point of moving up into my arms and shoulder area, making me feel as if i could just explode from the inside out, or crawl out of my own skin. EVERY relative on my mother's side of the family has RLS, and Diphenhydramine does the same thing to them. Another class of drugs that I have discovered that I can NOT take is TCAs, aka Tricyclic antidepressants (An older class of anti-depressant), such as Amitriptyline (Elavil), Trazodone (Deseryl), Doxepin, etc, as well as Muscle relaxants, (i.e. Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine), or Skelaxin (Metaxalone). Hope this helps someone. :)

I'm currently on Requip 2mg at bedtime, and another 2mg for mid-afternoon if i have early onset of RLS symptoms. I rarely have to take the daytime dose, but it's nice to have incase. When symptoms start early in the day around 2pm, i know i'm gonna be in for a rough night if I don't put the symptoms to a halt with a daytime dose. As far as insomnia related to Requip, I can't comment on, because I'm also on Ambien 10mg (2 tabs=20mg) at bedtime and Xanax 1mg 4 times daily, along with 150mg of Zoloft, and 150mg Seroquel at bedtime.
Thanks for your comments. My hubby takes xanax, & benadryl to help him sleep & I am going to tell him this right now as he is a chronntic leg shaker from his early life. says its the pain in his nueropic legs,. Maybe it's the meds?
Mary: I would almost be willing to bet $$ that if he stops the benedryl, and all other cough/cold meds that contain an antihistimine, his symptoms will improve, although it will probably take several days for the benedryl to leave his system. If he wants it out of his body as quickly as possible, have him take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar followed by a glass of water on an empty stomach when he wakes in the morning, for 3 or 4 days. Don't know why, but my doc recommended this, and says that it will flush antihistimines out of your system quicker, due to the high acidic content of the vinegar. NOTE: White vinegar won't do the trick!
Thanks Shanenc... Mary
