My father took the drug and after a while it stopped working. I asked the nurse about it and she said some people can see results in a week. I'm not taking any antidepressents at this time cause the were making me worse. I think I need a little break. I dont go to the doctor till the 23rd, and will be off of them for umm 3 week by then. Is that a long enough break? And can someone tell me more about Prestiq and is it covered by insurance since its a very new drug? I seemed to try every anti depresent out there, but for some reason I don't remember trying this.
Every time something bad happens in my life or think its bad I go down hill can someone help me.

Hi,
I hope you are well.
With regards to"taking a break", and then asking if it is too long , are you planning on starting this new med on your own? Because if you do, you would be making a very big mistake, there are many factors that have to be consired with your Doctor, so before you decide to self medicate talk to a Spysichiatrist ... from a caring individual
Yes Effexor is used to treart depression
ALL OF THE LISTED BELOW HAS TO BE SUPERVISED BY A DOCTOR (THAT YOU TRUST)... OK
What Is Pristiq?
Pristiq (desvenlafaxine succinate) is a prescription medication used to treat depression. It comes in an extended-release tablet, meaning the medicine is released slowly into your body over time. Because Pristiq is long-acting, it is taken just once a day.

I was on Effexor (high dose) a few years ago. It worked for me well as more of a mood stabilizer. No highs, but no lows either. The mistake I made was quitting cold turkey! I felt like I couldn't even walk straight. So if you decide to start this medication, start with the low dose and see how you adjust. I had tried others in the past but Effexor worked best for me. What ever you do, don't start it then stop without properly tapering down under your docs supervision. Good luck to you on whatever you decide. As far as Pristiq, the POSSIBLE side effects listed are the same on most anti depressants and normally people rarely have them. Hope it works out well for you and best of luck!
Chris
I've been on Effexor-225mg for years. I forgot to take it one time and within 12 hours I felt like I had the worst flu of my life i was curled up in a ball in bed-fortunately it dawned on me that i forgot to take it. Within 30 minutes after taking it, I felt completely normal. I don't know how you survived cold turkey! Was your dose lower? Or am I just supersensitive to meds? (my body is supersensitive-therapist/I call me the canary in the coal mine)
I'm glad you didn't end up in the ER.

I found Effexor to be a wonderful anti depressant for me, didn't get it for 2 days and started crying while reading a Danielle Steele book, so know you have to wean off of it. BUT, and this is documented, so check it out for yourself, it causes extreme weight gain in most people and even after you quit taking it, the weight does not come off for a long time, it's a strange thing, lots of a/d cause a bit of weight gain, but Effexor causes ALOT of weight gain, as i said, in "most" people, and after quitting, you're looking at a year probably before getting back to your normal weight. So, if you are skinny and need a few pounds I would highly recommend it. If you are overweight and gaining more would be detrimental to either your physical or mental health, I'd definitely look into something else. Don't know about Pristiq from personal experience, but you got quite a bit of info on it, so i guess it's up to you.
I DO NOT THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO JUST TAKE A BREAK FROM ANY PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION WITHOUT TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR WITHDRAW COULD BE A REAL BIT H IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN AND IT CAN LAST A LONG TIME
Hi I weaned off of it and told the nurse, the doctor has been on vacation and he does not call anyone back. I didn't cold turkey it. Sometimes you need a break that the anti depressents make you worse.

Hi, I am new to drug.com and saw your post, and can relate to you in a couple of ways. One, I am taking Effexor XR for anxiety and depression, and I would say it has worked. Two, you also said you were bipolar and was wondering if there was a drug for that. My father is bipolar and takes Effexor XR and it does WONDERS for that! He went thru YEARS of not finding the right drug, he even had electric shock treatments, it was that bad. And he finally found the right mix... has been on 2 drugs for bipolar and depression for yrs... EffexorXR and Depakote. I am not familiar with Prestiq. Hope this helps!

Hi,
I was on Effexor for a few years and didn't have any negative side effects, however, was eventually diagnosed with Bipolar 2 and am now taking Lamictal after being weaned off of Effexor. Lamictal is a miracle drug for me... feel so much better than I ever did on Effexor... but of course it was for depression & not for a chemical imbalance.
Best advice I can give is don't start anything on your own. What worked for your father may not work for you. Are you sure you have only depression? Last let your doctor diagnose/medicate you, being your own physician makes about as much sense as being your own lawyer...
Hi Melissa... How long it took for effexor to work for you? a month, two, or three... I have been a month on 225 effexor xr and it seems to work, but I still wake up in the morning and wish to die..in the evening I'm a little better... I feel I don't have a heart at all...

Effor is a good antidepressent if you can take it. Some side effects are tough but it works pretty well. Pristiq is just that, new. I have a friend who is on It and saw and felt immediately better. If i ever change I may suggest to my doc to try me on that. After seeing her progress, I'm impressed and have been on meds since 1992. I an also Bipolar RapidCycle. I need meds to keep me not only stable but in this world.

I have been taking Effexor for years now.. I went through the same thing that you have been growing through, and it is horrible!!! I can say YES effexor has been the ONLY one out of a lot that has worked for me!!! It makes a huge difference but just make sure you never stop taking it instantly.. The side effects of it is cruciall!!! Good LUCK!
Hi Jessy? Can you please tell after how many weeks effexor xr worked for you? I have tried dif ssri and nothing helped me..I have Major Depression/anxiety... I started effexor xr 5 weeks ago and I feel a little better, but I still feel like I have no heart especially in the morning (I just want to die in the morning), but after 12 noon I somehow feel different... more house work, organizing... I don't any side effects... but still I'm not back to myself yet... I feel so hopeless that there is a way out of this hell, and I have 2 young children that need me...

My son started taking Effexor 7 months ago and he started feeling much better in 3-4 weeks. He is still taking it and has absolutely no symptoms of depression. The only side effect he noted was being a little more tired than usual when he first started taking it, but he thought they might also have been due to the fact that he hadn't been sleeping much in the months prior and was just catching up. His doctor and psychiatrist said it is not possible to see the results in a week so hang in there. Good luck and don't read all of the negative posts that you will find... I think when people are feeling better they don't go in and update! HANG IN THERE! Things will get better.
Hi Dorothy:
I am on the fifth week of the Effexor Xr, and a week now I haven't been crying even for a minute. I was crying every day for the past 8 months and I have MD. I feel more relaxed, closer to my children, doing more housework, doing my job better, BUT I'm still not back to my old self. I still feel kind of disconnected and feel like I have no Heart... EVENTHOUGH I'm laughing more and singing and dancing more with my children. Should I wait for more time to feel back to myself... I'm so tired of waiting... BUT I'M NOT GIVING UP FOR THE SAKE OF MY CHILDREN...
Unless you have really severe mental issue stay away from this medication, it's hard to get off and the side affects will make you lose your mind. Don't do it.im trying to get off with just a quarter of a tab and I have electric shocks all day. Hospitals haven't helped. Looking for a good psychiatrist now. To help me. Stop this garbage.

Hi, I know how it feels. You take 2 steps forward and 3back. I know it is very hard to not let things get you down but in the world the way it is there is so much negetive things around us that people with disorders and depression it is so hard to handle everything. Pills work for somethings but I don't think they can for everything. I find for myself. Learning what triggers things inside you and knowing what you are able to do and what you can't do has helped me. I have good days and bad and it will most likely be that way all my life but if you can uncover what it is in you that hurts so much i think you can deal with life a lot better. I do not even watch the news anymore. I try to stay away from negetive things and people. I can't be around a lot of people because I have very bad trust issues. Find someone that can help you find out where all the hurt you have is coming from. Write your feelings each day in a book.

YES, Effexor really treated my depression. I was already taking 75 mg. I got terribly depressed due my complete lack of any quality of life because of my 24/7 migraines after a stroke. I mean I was often in severe pain and couldn't do much of anything. I told the doctor that my depression was so situational that I was sure that no meds could help it. I still increased the Effexor by 37.5 mg and in 4 weeks, my depression had totally lifted with the same terrible life. YES, it can really work.
Although I was severely depressed from some events the 3 months before (above), l also think sometimes you need to increase the dose to keep the drug working.

By the way do not forget that the country where I live in one can get many meds without prescription..that was my main concern. I forgot how strict it is in the states here one can practically get anything one wants (there are exceptions).

im sure she wasnt talking about self medicating. she said she is going to the dr. im sure thats whats she's going for. not trying to sound rude maso... cuz i love ya and u give great advice! i just dont think thats her intention
I'm sure you've already gotten your Rx since your posting but I was on Pristiq 50mg and had NO side effects and only had AWESOME results from the medicine. I felt back to myself within the first 2 weeks. When I went in for my 2 week f/u appt. I expressed my concern on the HIGH price of the drug (since no generic is available) even with Insurance. Even with the "up to $15 off" each monthly Rx with Prestiq card, it's still expensive. Then take into account co-pays for Dr's and my other meds, it gets very expensive QUICK so my Dr switched me to Effexor XR 75 mg for the first week (taking 1 pill a day) then from the 2nd week on I take (2) 75mg pills henceforward. Works great and no side effects. VERY affordable - $20 co-pay! Heck of a lot of saving for me!!! I love not being in that depressed state and feeling anymore.

I feel like ME - all ME and even if that means I need a anti-depressant for that to help, fine by me; since i was one to never believe in anti-depressants until I needed to take them (after a still birth). I have a whole new mind set on the drugs now. They really do help and I believe if I need them for a short period of time great, if I need them longer, fine to!

i have been taking effexor for awhile now, and i take 400mgs. i ran out of them one day and went 4 days with out them. it was the worst time of my life. i got a partial bottle of them and the VA was supposed to send the rest, well they didnt so that week without effexor i had hot and cold sweats, a lot vomiting, could barely talk, shaking, bad crying spells, i want to die just flat out die. i wanted to kill myself. My husband had to drive me to the E.R. to get some more, it was so bad. this medicine is no joke. if you plan on stopping it without telling your dr. ween yourself of off it first. that was the worst experience of my life and im so scared to take these pills but im also scared not to take them
