I got a script for Fioricet for tension headaches, but I was very surprised to see it said it could be habit forming. Wondering what is in it. Someone told me it is a barbituate? Is that true? Barbs are dangerous and rarely prescribed b/c I thought those can affect breathing. Doctor said nothing. Have not taken one yet, but my head is killing me, but I wonder b/c I take Xanax for my panic disorder and doctor knows this so I am concerned about the interaction. More info if anyone has taken Fioricet and is familiar with this drug. Thanks
Does anyone know about a drug called Fioricet? For headaches?

Fioricet is acetaminophen, caffeine and butalbital which is a very mild barbiturate. Fioricet is relatively safe when taken as ordered and in moderation to prevent rebound headaches. Fioricet with Codeine or Fioricet #3 has 30mg codeine in it. It sounds as though your Dr has given you plain Fioricet though. Fioricet can be very helpful with tesion headaches. As long as you are careful, you should not have a problem.

Yes, I take Fioricet for headaches. I get migraines, but I also get this weird headache in my neck that whenever I try to explain it to my neurologist or pain specialist they just look at me like I am crazy. Sometimes I take my migraine medication but it doesn't work and I take 1 or 2 of the Fioricet and Viola! Headache is gone. Two tablets makes me slightly sleepy but not too much. I did take Fioricet for a week at one point, taking two tablets every four hours around the clock for 7 days. I had a spinal fluid leak and Fioricet was prescribed to help with the resulting headache. After a week of taking it steadily I was shaking all over my body. It took me a couple of days to wean back off of it and for the shaking to stop. I believe this is because of the caffeine and the barbituate in it. All in all, I do find it an effective treatment for headaches that are not standard migraines.

Thanks DzooBaby. Do u know if it would interact with Xanax? I would assume it could. I take Xanax 2x day 2mg as needed for panic attacks. I am wondering if I need to space out my Xanax dose b/c the instructions for the Fioricet say it can interact with tranquilizers, and Xanax is a benzo. and a pretty powerful one, so I am a bit concerned about the interaction. Like Xanax works quickly, and I am not sure how quickly the Fioricet works, but I am wondering about any dopy side effects. Did some net research and ppl say different things, obviously not to take them together, but i would assume it could still interact even if I space it out. Just wondering if the side effects would lead to some kind of unwanted intoxication. If u know, any advice would help or maybe I should ask pharmacist? Doctor is gone for the day.
Taking them together could cause some increased sedation and feeling "dpoed up" for certain. If you need to take them in the same day space them out about 4 hours from each other.
I meant doped up. I cant type today! lol
