... question. Because I have been on Dilantin for so long & its worked great have any of you changed to another seizure med that works just as well? I take the 100mg casules but something strange happened, I refilled my prescrition at least 4 months ago and noticed not only did the price drop but the label @the bottom said phenytoin not Dilantin. Yet the actual label says Dilantin 100mg. Anyone had this happen?

Hi,
Phenytoin and Dilantin are actually the same drug. Could be that the drug patten has expired or something like that which has lowered the price for you. This is often what happens when a generic drug can be made after a certain time has expired on the original drug or the drug price is reduced because there are other newer drugs. Talk with your pharmacist if you are dubious. If it is working well for you I would not switch as often it can upset the apple cart so to speak. Sometimes the body is used to the older drug and if you are stable its best to stay with it.

Sounds like your pharmacy changed you from the brand name medication to the generic. Some insurance companies require this, or it could be that there were no Generics before and now there are. Best thing to do is try it - if you get a different response contact your insurance company to see what you need to do to have your doctor request brand name only. Sometimes the dr just needs to write "brand name medically necessary" on the prescription, but some insurers require prior authorization forms filled out by the Dr. Try it and see - there may not be any difference. You are smart to be alert and check your prescriptions each time they are filled - pharmacies, doctors - they all make mistakes. Best to be proactive rather than reactive to an incorrect medication! Take care now -

Hello I am also new here . My comment to you is if you drive get back on the brand rather then generic . the main ingredient might be bthe same but formulation may be diff a minor traffic accident could mean loss of driving privilages in your state if decided it had to do with a seizure and drs are required to report it to the motor vehicle commision in your state.
