By far the best alternative is, IMHO, a Diabetes "Pump".
Here are some useful links on the topic. The 1st article is by the American Diabetes Association and is absolutely unbiased, the 2nd is from Medicine.net which is a commercial site (but the info is still valid), the 3rd is from a blog of a very happy user of the Diabetes Pump.

Thank you for your response - unfortunately my dad's doctor has no idea :( what to do - we are in the process of finding him a better doctor - in meantime we found some info on Levitar and NovoLog and he is going to try with them - my dad is from Europe and only recently came to the USA and his original prescriptiona was for Insulatard and Actrapid but you cannot get them here :( Please, if you find any more info, let me know !!
I'll keep it in mind.
