I was taking 280mg of Effexor before being switched to Cymbalta and I don't feel anything and my depression is getting worse on 120 mg of Cymbalta. I don't know what else I can do to make it take effect faster does anyone else?

Taking higher doses will not make it work faster. The medication has to build in the system to a theraputic level which is a factor of time not quantity. The maximum recommended dose of cymbalta is 120mgs. I don't believe that greater dosages will cause much improvement.
Thanks for the info. I have the kind of dr that prescribes and then tells me to use my judgement. I will stick it out at 120mg though cause I am definately just looking for some relief and not for a high. Just gets so frustrating ya know. Thanks again.
Laurie is right. You didn't mention how long you have been on cymbalta, & it can take upwards of 4 to 6 weeks before feeling the effects of these drugs, so give it plenty of time. If after this period it doesnt seem to help, you should talk to your doctor about trying something different. Psychiatric meds are sometime a hit & miss situation, & you may have to try several different kinds befire you find one that fits your needs... Mary
I have been on Cymbalta for 4 years at 60mg and it worked beautifully for
depression..and then it stopped about a month ago. The doctor upped me to
90mg saying it would take a week to kick in and that was two weeks ago and NOTHING!!! He is a GP not a psychiatrist as I am new to the area and just found a psychiatrist but can't get into seeing him until May..UGH!!! Any thoughts from this panel???

Prettymessdup,
I know it it frustruating waiting for your med to work but antidepressants take time. Every one reacts differently to each kind of them also. Wait a few weeks and give your doctor an update always. If your doctor is not good get another one who is. A Psychiatrist is the best for meds like this. Hope this helps!

I wonder if some of your problems could be from withdrawing from the Effexor. That can be an exceptionally difficult medication to get off. People have written that it was the most horrible experience of their lives. I saw my sweet mild voiced mother turn into a loud mouthed swearing, yelling maniac when her dose was cut down suddenly by mistake by the facility.
You may want to ask your doctor if you could go back on a lower dose of the Effexor while you wait for the Cymbalta to work. But you need to ask, because it could prove to be dangerous if there is a conflict between the 2 medications.

I am going on my 2nd week and I came directly off of Effexor. I am not looking for a high although it may seem that way. I just have a dr that doesn't really do his job when it comes to be informative so I figure asking my peers should set me straight. Lol
Why are you switching meds? I'm on Effexor now since the Cymbalta caused bad headaches but worked much better & much quicker. Cymbalta does take 6 weeks to see full benefits but it may just not be the right med for you!?
I might also add that a 'high' is not what you get from these type of medications. They are specifically for depression with some off label uses also. I hope you are seeing a psychiatrist for getting these meds as a PCP is not really the type of doc to see concerning these issues. Yes, they can prescribe them, but are not the experts when it come to psychiatric drugs. Talk therapy also does wonders, & a psychiatrist is the correct doctor to see for this. He would be a better judge of which kind of med will help you the best for your set of problems...
