Everyone is different but it does help with nerve pain. I stopped the Cymbalta because I have gained weight on a weekly basis the last few months, You need to decide if having less pain is better than gaining weight. I stopped Cymbalta because I gained around 12 pounds. Also Cymbalta is not an easy med to withdraw from. I am a couple weeks past taking Cymbalta and I still have side effects from withdrawl but it has lessened. I know I will not go back on this medication. It did help with some of my pain but I would of needed to increase the dose since it was not working like it did when I first started. I only took 40MG. because a higher dose made me have a lot of stomach pain. But remember there is no way to know for sure until you see how it reacts to your body. Most of these type of meds cause weight to increase. Good luck and let me know what you decide. Make sure you talk to your Dr. about concerns.

I have been on Cymbalta for years. FYI All antidepressants make it harder to lose weight.
I found that prednisone and gabapentin put 100lbs on me. But now I'm losing weight because I've been hypo thyroid for years. I also live a vegan lifestyle (for over) which has help to accelerate my weight loss.
IF you can swim in a warm pool, that would be another place to go to lose weight without pain.

Dear the cleo,
I tried Cymbalta and quit for two main reasons... weight gain, and severe drowsiness. I did find it helped with the pain, but I couldn't hardly stay awake. I am now on Pristiq. And take pain medication for the other. I do hope you find something that will work for you. Best wishes. Ruth

Hello the cleo. No. Generally people loose weight when taking Cymbalta. In clinical studies, 9% of people taking it, reported a loss of appetite, and 2% reported weight loss. Weight gain, is as a rule an issue. Of course you'll have people who do gain weight while taking the drug. I was on it for some time and gained no weight. Regards, pledge

My pain doc won't even prescribe cymbalta because of the effects of coming off of it, but there are other drugs, ( all have different reactions, & everyone reacts differently) that could help you like neruontin or it's generic gabepentin, Savella, & Lyrica. Just a thought... Mary

i have good friend who just started it a month ago. he is a recovering addict too.his well our doc same guy told him that it is non narcotic and safe for him to take. are you all telling me there are withdraw symptoms if he stops taking it?and could these withdraw symptoms Leed him back to seeking "relief" from other less perscribed means?
It is not an opioid or related to opioids. It is an antidepressant drug. Most anti-depressants have withdrawal effects but not the same withdrawals that opioids have. It wont cause him to crave opioids. It can cause things like lethargy, brain zaps, aggression and anger, ringing in the ears, dizziness, nausea, headache, paresthesia, fatigue, vomiting, irritability, insomnia, diarrhea, anxiety, and hyperhidrosis. A person should be tapered when they discontinue treatment with this medication.

Subzero,
That's not what we are saying at all. Cymbalta is an anti-depressant and now is being advertised on TV as a pain reliever. Never helped my pain and I just stopped after 7years without anything happening to me
Not even a headache.
Peace,
Laura
If you had diabetes or high blood pressure, would you stop your medication cold turkey?? No, of course not, because you cannot risk your blood pressure to go through the roof, nor could you stop your sugar from peeking dangerously high.
The same thing goes for antidepressants and other meds. Some meds are physically dependent versus addicting. Even people on pain meds are physically dependent, and cannot just go off cold turkey even if the are NOT addicts.
You are mixing up the differences between the two.

I had weight gain but it was mainly water weight. I had to stop treatment because I swelled up really bad with this drug. It started in my hands and feet but then my face and lips started swelling so I stopped it. I was only on it a month or so and I didnt have any ill effects from stopping that early into treatment. According to clinincal studies people were losing weight rather than gaining but the studies were done on depressed individuals, not pain patients, so it is difficult to know if the loss was from depression getting better or if the drug caused the loss. It might be worth a try. I know many people who take this drug who say it has really helped their pain. I wish I could take some of these drugs. I cant take Lyrica or Neurontin either.

Everybody is different. I didn't know that I had gained a bunch of weight on Cymbalta, but when I stopped, I dropped over 20+ pounds without trying. You will only know the answer if you try it and gain, or not gain weight.
Cymbalta is an excellent med for some people who are in pain. I would at least try it for a bit. Good luck!
