Manufacturers say you are fully protected after seven days of pills taken correctly. When I used to work at a family planning clinic, we told women to use back up protection through a full pack to be sure they are fully protected. Birth control pills have about a 98-99% success rate which means out of 100 women, 1-2 get pregnant even when using the pill correctly. Missing pills ups the failure rate of course. Also remember that antibiotics will decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills so you should use a back up method while you are on antibiotics and for 7 days after you finish the antibiotic. Many women that do not heed this advice become pregnant while they are on antibiotics. Once you are on the pills and become fully protected, your partner can ejaculate (or cum) inside you and you have about a 1 to 2 in 100 chance of becoming pregnant. Only abstinance gives you 100% protection.
