Metamucil is a bulk-forming fiber laxative. Psyllium works by absorbing liquid in the intestines and swelling to create a softer, bulky stool that is easier to pass. It is essentially a fiber supplement. You don't say how old your granddaughter is - it is recommended that Metamucil is used under a doctor's supervision for children under 6 years.

Kristalose contains lactulose which is a type of sugar. It is broken down in the large intestine into mild acids that draw water into the colon, which helps soften the stools. This is probably the most common treatment for constipation in children.

Neither Kristalose or Metamucil should be given while she is suffering from diarrhea.
