Metamucil is a bulk-forming fiber laxative. Psyllium works by absorbing liquid in the intestines and swelling to create a softer, bulky stool that is easier to pass. It is essentially a fiber supplement. You don't say how old your granddaughter is - it is recommended that Metamucil is used under a doctor's supervision for children under 6 years.
