Tee6759I have been taking 200mg of topamax twice a day. Now its become too expensive for me to afford. I'm concerned about how my body will react. I've been on this dose for 4 years. My pharmacists are try to get my doctor to change my med to something less expensive. If anyone can offer information, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried to get assistance with it? I just looked up the cost. That's outrageous! I would advise you get the docs help in stopping it if he can't change it. I know you have to wean off, but other then a chance of seizures if stopped abruptly I don't know must else about it.

There is a generic drug for Topamax, it was approved in Canada in 2006 and in the US in Dec of 2010 it is called Torpirmate which is the drug name I took this drug Topamax for 2 years after my Brain surgery. I hated this drug but needed it do to my headach's.
Do not stop taking this drug until you talk to your Dr. the side afects from coming off of this drug is really tough. I would ask your Dr. to start you on the generic ASAP.

The generic is what I'm taking now. It is over $235.00. I can't afford. I run out in less than a week and I'm already too low in pills to wean off oft. I'm not sue what they can do to replace it. Thanks for responding.

I also take topiramate. Don't you have insurance hun? I am sorry they are so expensive. I have been taking 100mg 2x a day for quite few years. I just had my doctor up them to 200mg 2x a day. But I have had my Ins. be cancelled for not turning in paperwork on time, and other bull crap. So my medications have run out abruptly, and I mean all of them. I have never had any adverse reactions. Sometimes I just decide to stop taking a medication, and stop taking it. I would say with the medication you have left go down to one pill per day until there gone. you should be fine. If you feel anything at all I would call your doctor right away. But I would say you should be fine.

good luck Tee, also try what kaismama said. you may get your medication at no or very low cost. hope that is the case. let us know?
as someone else indicated, don't stop this med abruptly, you could have a siezure, i'm sure the percentage is low, for siezures, but still...
p.s. do you suffer from migraines?
