Codeine/Promethazine - do you need a prescripiton to buy promethazine?

actually the first answer you recieved was rite and wrong! you cannot buy codeine/promethazine without a perscription that i know of. but you can buy codeine/guaifenesin cough syrup OTC (over the counter, without a perscription). it is known as cheratussin AC.it is widely available but depending on state law it may or may not be. for example i live in wisconsin and i can buy a bottle for ten dollars without a perscription no problem.im not sure if it is the same everywhere but here you cannoy buy it at large coorperate pharmacies like walgreens you have to go to a smaller private owned "mom & pop" type pharmacies. each of these pharmacies that do sell it each have there own set of rules. one place required an I.D. that specified you lived in that area and another required that i have had perscriptions filled there previously. also im pretty sure you can only buy 1 bottle 40z. (118ml) a month appx. 240 mg of codeine (10mg/5ml ), and just like if you buy cold medicine they need your drivers liecense and take down your information and record the purchase. it may sound like alot but it is really not, i just wanted to include everything i have experienced trying to buy this medication as it works great and i usually go thru a bottle or two everytime i get a cold.its not that hard to get your hands on, just get a phone book and start callin pharmacies and see which one will sell it. if you happen to live in canada the laws are a lil looser im not sure about codeine cough syrups but you can buy a codeine tablet OTC just by asking for it at the pharmacie counter and having an ID that says you are 18yrs or older.they are 300mg acetaminophen(tylenol)15mg caffeine and 8mg codeine per tablet. these are great for headaches. you are allowed to bring back over the border up to 200 tabs per person in your car and youre told at the pharmacy to keep your reciept. iv done this myself and brought back alot more than just 200tabs a person but our vehicle wasnt searched and only one pharmacist told us about the 200 tab limit so we figured we would just play stupid and say we didnt know there was a limit. anyway i hope this info helps you or anyone else out there as we are approaching cold and flu season and codeine can really take the edge of a the worst of em. it helps with aches and pains (obviously its a painkiller) but also helps the coughing process to loosen chest congestion.
