It is very difficult to predict which drug will work best for each person because there are over 50 different chemical messengers in the human brain! Although Citalopram only directly affects serotonin, it is likely that there is a flow on effect to other chemical messengers. Therefore, what works beautifully for one person may be poison for another. It's a bit like that old saying, "one man's medicine is another man's poison".
The warning is given because in clinical trials, some people become suicidal after taking these drugs. However, the incidence is usually not high and more people are helped by taking that drug than harmed. Therefore it gets approved for use.
I have taken Aropax (Paxil), Lexapro and Cymbalta. Of these, only Lexapro made me suicidal. I wasn't even depressed when I went on it!! ( I have generalised anxiety disorder and like to control it with medication). Yet I had been on Aropax for over 10 years and never had that problem.
Rita,
As Junior pointed out, these are just know POSSIBLE side effects. The drug companies have to make consumers aware of the by law. You'd be surprised by all of the POSSIBILITIES of some meds. Give the medication a try and if you feel that you are experiencing any of the side effects, just inform your doctor and work with him/her on finding an alternative med. By the way, citalopram usually takes about 4-6 weeks before patients start noticing any marked improvement. Hope this helps. Good luck and God bless.
Rita, your doctor will want to monitor how you are going on whatever drug you are taking. One, to see whether the drug is causing you any problems, and two, whether it is actually helping. I don't know the reason for him prescribing it but if he is treating you, then he needs to monitor that treatment until the problem is resolved.
BTW you will definitely know that you are having suicidal thoughts. Lexapro made me feel quite depressed for a start. However, it was when I found myself seriously thinking of slitting my wrists (my thought process was that I should cut right down the vein {kind of follow it] not across my wrist, that way the blood would really spurt) I KNEW it was time to get off the Lexapro!!
I was put on this pill for anxiety/panic attacks.....boy do they suck just experienced my 1st panic and they r no fun feels like you're dying right there and then! And back to that pill can u stop taking the pill as fast as u started it????
And Junior I was on lexapro not for long believe that cause they made me feel like I was on coke ,I was abel to climb mountains 24/7 on those ,made my heart beat like crazy and I didn't like it a bit ! So yea stopped those long ago :)

I'm just paranoid when it comes to taking pills, had bad experiences b4 with pills .And if they take 4-6 weeks why does he (my Doc) wanna see me in 3 weeks again??? Hmmmm.
It's just scary reading up on the side effects . Are you taking the same pill???? Now that may be a real dumb question but how would you know if you're having suicidal thoughts????? Thanks 4 your answer though !:)
