Zovirax is an antiviral. You'll need a doctor to diagnose the cause of your sore (viral? bacterial? fungal?)

Logical response, and welcome, but kind'a defeats the whole self-medication-by-raiding-friends-out dated stuff-remedy

No you should not use Zovirax ointment on your sore.
It is not an antibiotic cream it is an antiviral cream so would be ineffective (assuming you have a bacterial infection.)
Your pharmacist may be able to suggest an over the counter antibacterial cream that you could use instead.
