In SOME states, you can buy some non-legend C-V codeine-containing cough syrups over the counter, IF the pharmacy carries them. It is ultimately the pharmacist's decision or sometimes the pharmacy's policy. Only 4 ounces can be purchased at a time, you and the pharmacist must sign a register, and you cannot buy it more frequently than 72 hours or longer..

It is quite possible that the pharmacy carries a generic, as it's been quite a while since I've seen the Novahistine brand.. Keep in mind that the formulation may also have changed to include phenylephrine as the decongestion.
