My cardiologist said do this as way to get my MIL off oxycontin which she has been taking for some time for pain resulting from back surgery. Cautions say not to break crush or chew this medication. ???

No way!! Never break, crush, split or alter OxyContin pills in any way!! It can defeat the time release mechanism and release toxic amounts of medication. This is exactly the reason I agree with the REMS program. Many Drs do not know enough about pain medicines and this kind of advice could poison someone! DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE!! You are VERY right for questioning it!! You might be able to do this on a non time release medication but not on something time released like OxyContin!!! This Dr must not realize that OxyContin is time released or he is an idiot-sorry, this kind of advice just gets my dander up because many people blindly follow the advice of a Dr and advice like this could kill someone! The only way to taper from OxyContin is to prescribe lower doses and to space out those doses until the person can quit altogether or to go on something like Suboxone then taper off that.
