My father just passed away after 4 months of detoxing from methadone. He used methadone off and on for 30 years. He used to mix Methadone and Xanex. Could he have taken something to relieve the withdrawal symptoms to cause his heart to stop or mixed methadone with something? Please help.

Welcome to the site. I am terribly sorry for your loss. Actually methadone is not supposed to be given at the same time any benzos are prescribed as it can cause slowed breathing and also can cause you to stop breathing, it is not supposed to be given with any medication that causes sedation, alcohol, benzos, muscle relaxers or sleeping pills. It tends to build in the fat layers of the body and so do benzos, both will cause a person to test positive for use for weeks after the last dose. He could have taken something, or he may have been in a weakened state health wise, or just the combo of those 2 mes may have contributed to his death. So sorry, I will keep you in my prayers. Patti

Hello Ahava29 & welcome to the site. I am so sorry you have lost your Father, & my heart goes out to you. Patti is right, but I was on Methadone & Xanax & had no such problems even while dropping slowly down to get off of methadone to change back over to a different pain med as I didn't like methadone or the way it made me feel. You don't really say why your Father was on methadone & xanax so I assume it was for chontic pain as well as I. Why was he trying to reduce it? Actually the less he took would be better for him if done properly at a slow pace. Just some thoughts, & I wish you peace about your Fathers passing. It is so hard...
My father was a herion addict before I was born and was on methadone my whole life..(i just turned 30) He said when he didnt have it he was in pain. I know he meant emotionally and he did hurt his back so I think that added to the pain. He was detoxing because I asked him to and even though he didnt want to he did it. Not long after he wanted back and then my mom said he came home falling all over and knodding out like he used to when hed mix methoadone and xannex but this time he didnt wake up. My father was a brilliant man and knew what to mix and what not to. People keep telling me it was G-d`s time to take him but I know I need to make sense of this for me.
Ahava, you didn't mention how old your Father was or other health conditions he might have had that may have contributed to his demise, but I believe unless he actually od'd on the methadone & xanax he should have been ok. It's just so hard to say without knowing the person to say it was this or that. Do you understand what I am saying? Was there an autopsy? Did that reveal anything? Or did they just assume his death was an overdose? Like I say no one can second guess as to why these things happen. We have a member of the group whos Mother passed away last night &it has everyone upset here, but she was 94 & had lived her life. Our sorrow is meant for her son who is the member. He is disabled & is very sickly himself. We all care, & even about you. I don't & can't give you a pat answer about why your Father passed away. It's so hard to lose a parent, even when you are grown. My mother died at 67 after an aorta rupture.

Hi Patti, thank you so much for your response. If he was on benzos and took a dose of menthadone could that be a factor? I asked him to detox and he told my mom he was in pain and wanted to go back so im blaming myself obviously. He was in a weakned health state because of the detoxI think and he did have COPD but not advanced. Its killing me that I dont know what happened.
Yes, that could have been a factor. His weakened health particularly history of COPD, he was in withdrawal (detoxing) and the combo of 2 meds that both slow the breathing, all or any of those things could have caused it. i hope you won't take offense to what i say next, ... that God called him home because God wanted him home. When a person is lost, the family grieves, that is natural, to want to know why is natural too. My dad died at a table full of drs of his first and only heart attack, he had an appointment to have a full panel of tests run on wednesday, but God decided, on the Monday before, to call him home. He worked for the VA hospital, was having lunch with a table full of drs, but he could not be saved. Those drs loved him too. I was very small, had just turned 5, and i remember my mom saying, daddy will not be coming home tonight, God Called him home.

Daddy was God's little boy before he was your daddy, and just like when i call you to supper and say come right now, that is what God did, he called him to come right then. So, we are NOT mad at God, and God would not have called him home unless He had a plan for us to go on without him. Sometimes we have no idea why someone passes away young, we may never know why. I thought my Mom did a good job of handling telling us small kids about my dad, when she was probably in shock herself. You may never know which of the conditions caused your brother's passing, but i know neither you nor your Mother was at fault, God just called your brother home. Not to punish him, you or Mom, God just wanted him home. I know you are grieving as it took some time for you to respond, that is normal, but do try to stay here for support, or see a therapist for support. please don't blame yourself. Please don't. If you would like some support, just stay here on this site and try friending some people, look to see who has answered recently, some top members, like Rob and Paulyboy,no longer answer, not sure where they are. mary632009, Sweetlemon, Pup6767, LaurieShay, Tee, and many others are here almost daily. I may be out of pocket this weekend, will try to check back tho. again, i am sorry for the loss of your brother. Patti
