Birth control inactive "sugar" pills?

I have heard that you can skip the sugar pill. That the only reason you take it is so you don't get out of habit of taking a pill everyday?? Is this true? What does the sugar pill really do??

It doesn't do anything but what you stated. When the pill first came out, they didn't even have them.
