I'm currently on 100mg lamictal once daily for Bipolar Manic Depression. I have been on this same dose for almost 6yrs & I dont feel I live productive life. Most days I sit on couch depressed & crying bcause I see all the housework that needs to b done but mentally I cannot physically get up & do it which upsets me even more... I am considering askin my Dr to change me to Effexor. Does anyone have opinion or similiar situation they could offer me some insight?

Please think carefully regarding effexor. I have recently went through withdrawal from Effexor. It is absolutely horrible! Not to mention the 20 pounds gained while taking it for 9 months. For get up and go, perhaps wellbrutin would be a good choice. I will be adding lamictal to 300 mg wellbrutin. Did research and this seems to be a good combination. For me the effexor left me feeling drugged, not motivated at all. Fat and drugged... depressing and very un motivating! I wish you well. Nancy

If your current medications aren't working for you, then your doctor may need to try a completely different type of bipolar medication. Lithium is a good alternative to try if all else fails. I currently take lithium at 900 mg. daily with an antidepressant. Lithium has helped many people with the depression of bipolar disease. Im sure your doctor will find a solution to your depression.

Effexor work well for me but it increase my appetite .. That was sumthing i didn't like due to me being conscious about weight gain. However now i am on zydis and 100mg lamictal. Both are working well for me. There are some days where i get depressed and cry abit but otherwise i am able to function well. Exercise helps as well with the release of endorphins.. I struggle to push myself at times but it pays off... Hope this helps

I found Effexor to be horrible, but everyone reacts differently. I was taking it in additiona to Wellbutrin and all it did was make me nauseous(sp?), ruined my sex life and didn't help depression at all. When I started lamictal I was able to stop the Effexor cold turkey, which helped a lot. Now with lamictal and wellbutrin I've been cured.

I feel your pain about trying to find the right med combination. I've been on Lamictal and Wellbutrin for about 6 years and until 3 months ago I was doing exceptionally well. I had a trigger and now have had a major set back. Instead of changing meds completely my Pdoc increased my wellbutrin to 300 mg, which didn't seem to help much... and we are in the process of increasing my Lamictal from 200 mg to 300 mg, 25 mg per week. I have been very happy on Lamictal. I think you need to keep the line of communication wide open with your prescribing doctor. The right combo is out there for you. We need to stay strong and remember that we are dealing with a very serious illness, but it doesn't make us who we are. I am trying to gain more self confidence and conviction in my thoughts. I hate being in my crying stages and can't wait to be the smiler that I usually am.
Hang in there and keep your chin up.
