I have a sever case of Interstitial Cysitis with Hunners ulcers and have been seeing various pain specialists the last 10 years, I was just recently diagnosed with central sleep apnea and had the overnight study and had nearly 40 episodes of breathing problems, so the pulmonoligist told me that she was very very scared for me , she said all it would take is one extra pill in a moment of forgetfulness and thats it I will be dead, so anyway I was on Methadone and recently switched to MS contin as the pain Dr. thought this would help the sleep apnea, but she is not convinced, so I take 4 MS contin ever 6 hours and yesterday I cut back to 3, I really dont want to go cold turkey as I dont think I could hack that!! Thanx for any help!!

Hey yobunny,
I can appreciate your desire to wean off the MS Contin. You have the right idea. Slowly reducing the daily dosage every week is what you need to do. If you could tell us the number of milligrams you are taking, I would be better able to adivise you of the appropriate taper schedule.
Best wishes,
Laurie

Hi sorry I meant to say that I am on 30 milligrams one every six hours, yesterday I cut back to 3 though..Thanks a lot :)
Stay at the 3 pills a day every 8 hours for the next week until you can talk to the doctor. You are going to need to get a script of a lower dose morphine in order to complete the taper. You can not split the MS Contin as it is controlled release. You'll need to get either MS Contin in 15 mgs dose or morphine sulfate immediate release in 15mgs dose.
After one week of being on the 3 pills of 30mgs each, drop to 2 pills of 30mgs each (one every 12 hours) for a week, then you can drop to one 30 mg MS contin in the morning and one 15mg pill in the evening for a week, then drop to 2 15 mg for a week, then to one 15mg a day for a week. Then if you have the morphine sulfate immediate release you can slipt the pills and take half a pill once a day for a week, then stop. If you have the 15mg MS contin you will have to stop after the week of one 15mg pill a day.

Write this schedule down on a calender and count out your pills to make sure you have enough of the 30mg pills before you call the doctor for the 15mg pills. You will need 28 15mg pills and 42 30 mg pills in order to complete this taper.
