Dear Jane, welcome to the site. Dandruff is a broad term describing scalp flaking. It depends on what is causing the flakes as to what is best to treat it. Sometimes it is simple contact dermatitis, it can be a scalp fungus, it can be exec a, psosrriasis, or seborrhic dermatitis. An actual dermatologist should be able to pin point the cause of the flakes, regular drs may guess at what it is, as they often lack the training to identify specifically what is causing the flaking. The best dandruff shampoo I recommend to my hair clients is Kenra anti dandruff shampoo, you can find it at ULTA. Patti

Hello. As said, a dermatologist is your best bet. I found I was allergic to tea laurel sulfate. It is in most shampoos, hand soaps, body washes. It makes soap bubbly. There are sulfate free shampoos and are labeled. It is worth a try, especially if you have a sulfa allergy. Cleared my problem up right away even though I have thyroid problems.
Also be sure your thyroid is checked if you haven't had your yearly physical yet. This condition causes flaking skin and the scalp may be first affected. Many possible causes.
