What is the best dose of Seroquel XR for treating Borderline Personality Disorder?

I've recently started Seroquel XR for Borderline Personality Disorder (mainly for extreme anxiety/mood swings, dissociation, paranoia, self-harm urges). I'm taking 50mg in the evening. It's very sedating, which is fine to a point (I often have trouble sleeping due to anxiety), but I am looking forward to the sedation decreasing a little bit as I get more used to the drug.
My main question is: what is the best balance between efficacy for these symptoms and the side effects (specifically, weight gain and sedation)? Are most people taking 100mg/day? Is 50mg enough to help? I am very conscious of weight gain (this is my biggest fear with this drug), but I'm willing to do some work to keep the pounds off if it's helping a lot with the BPD symptoms.

Hello rmricci. In regards to BPD the dose can be 500mg to 600mg. I used it for several years and yes, weight gain was an issue. It certainly helped my insomnia, for I managed several hours of uniterrupted sleep. Most people take the drug during the evening or shortly before retiring because of its sedative effects/nature. As a long time psychiatric patient with bipolar II, depressed, OCD, borderline personality disorder, GAD, anxiety, agoraphobia and a bunch more I don't or won't remember, I believe there is no "right" dose for everyone. We are all unique and have and live in our own body with it's own idiosyncratic ways. But as pledge stated in the earlier post the regular dosing parameters, I believe start low and move the dosage up according to the results obtained at each level.
I admit I am a little skittish about starting new meds, my last psychiatrist put me on 2000 mgs of Depakote and the allergic reaction nearly killed me. So from now on, I start very low and increase dosage slowly. Only you and your shrink can decide what's right for you.
I happen to be deathly allergic to all atypical anti-psychotics, Seroquel being one of those I can't take, for better or worse. I am stuck with the old stand bye, the SSRI's and SNRI's...

Hi, as already mentioned, there isn't one dose to treat BPD. I have BPD and take Seroquel XR 200mg along with other medications. This works well for me. I have a friend though who also has BPD and she takes Seroquel XR 300mg. It really depends on the individual. Some people can be especially sensitive to Seroquel XR and need much lower doses to treat their condition. You should take the advice of you psychiatrist and/or doctor

I don't know what the minimum dose is for Seroquel XR but i'm on 100mg. 50mg in the moring & 50mg at night, but it's not the XR. I have been on it for 3 days now & the sedation is still pretty strong i'm hoping it goes away soon. I had to take time off work to start the meds because it makes me feel so high I can't do much for about an hour. After that it's all good i'm just mellow the rest of the day. Give it some more time everyone has told me to give it 4 weeks. i'm no doctor but i'd say 100mg is the lowest dose to help treat the symptoms of bpd. i know 50mg doesn't last all day & night for me. If your that concerned with the weight gain talk to your doctor maybe they can put you on something different.

i havent met anyone who has taken seroquel for a for over 12mths and has not gained weight (mostly on the stomach). for some reason it seems to bloat a lot of people, i have found the only thing that helps with the weight gane are food enzymes and digestive compound (papain) . The sedation affect becomes less over time and also is lessened by ironically "eating more before digesting it".good luck.
