My doctor just prescribed me Baclofen to help with my muscle spasms, cramps in hands, ankles, elbows, etc due to Fibro.
Can anyone share with me their personal experience with this medication? I just started it yesterday afternoon and so I can't really say if it is working yet. I am on 10mg 4x day. I did sleep late this morning and woke with foggy brain.
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks,
Jillynnie

Hi Jilly,
I've used Baclofen, although mostly for wds. However I was given it for pain, and told to take 10 mg and 6 in a day. I never did that. I get these awful cramps in my feet, especially when I sleep, and for a while they worked on that. But they stopped working for it so now I'm taking Flexeril 10 mg at night for it. Sometimes I take 10 mg twice in a night. I had been using Flexeril and it stopped working and then I noticed Baclofen did, so for a while it was great. I don't think neither of these is habit forming at all. If it doesn't work ask your doc about a drug called Zanaflex. I never took it but I know a man who does, and he says they work great for him.

The only thing that might have been a problem with Baclofen is that falling I was doing while sleep walking. I think (?) the nights I got really hurt I may have taken 2 or 3 Baclofen at once to try and stop the cramping. But I am not sure. I also wasn't told to take 3 at once or so close together. But pain leads me to do (sometimes) risky things to make it stop.
Basically I think Baclofen is 1 of the safer drugs I have had to take.
Hope this helped.

Dear jilly, sweetlemon took this and said it worked great for her pain, but then had some bad side effects from it. She tends to have major reactions a few weeks into taken new meds though anyway. Her internet was down yesterday but you still might try to pq her about baclofen. Patti

I am on and have been on baclofen for several years now. It does work for muscle spasms-it supposed to!
It also helped me with sleep. Up until recently, though when I started to get very disturbing dreams on it and don't take it too often any more.
It does what it is supposed to.

Hi: I live in FL and spent the summer in CA and had no problems getting Soma filled at Walgreens in either state.
I've been on it since '06 and LOVE it has a muscle relaxant and sleep aid.
I don't have Fibro, but rather extreme muscle and tendon pain in my neck and shoulders, from cervical spine issues.
I've never had to increase my dose and feel that some docs are just being stupid in denying it to those of us that really need it, and don't abuse it!
(It is the ONLY med that has ever worked for me with this problem!)
Hope you find something that works well for you!
Mary, madhatter

Thank you, Thor. I did sleep pretty hard last night. In fact, I was on another website (PatientsLikeMe) that my niece told me about. (she has MS and told me of the site and I joined. It is a pretty good one to check out if you aren't aware of it.) Anyway, I practically fell out of my chair..twice!! I was falling asleep at my desk and just..fell out! lol
I have a doctors appt in Dec with my Neuro. I am going to request an MRI of my brain to rule out MS. I know that Fibromyalgia, CFS, lupus and MS share a lot of the same symptoms and after talking with my niece at Thanksgiving, we share SO many symptoms I think this is a good idea. She was shocked that he hadn't requested one to rule MS out. Makes me wonder, too! :(
Thanks again for your feedback. Always great to hear from you. :)

Baclofen is a muscle relaxer prescribed to lots of patients with MS. It's not an MS med per se, but it is used often for people with that disease. I personally think Soma is a much better muscle relaxer. Just my opinion.
Robert,
I agree with you regarding the Soma, however the doctors won't prescribe it any more. Due to the ability to be dependent upon it. Silly, if they are still prescribing all sorts of pain meds that are addictive but are choosing THIS medication to stop prescribing. I was on Soma for a while a year or so ago prior to finally being diagnosed with Fibro. I asked about it, but was told they couldn't Rx it for me, so rx'd the Baclofen.
Thanks again,
Jillynnie
I have RA, Fibro, Raynaud's and APS ... all autoimmune disorders. My dr prescribes soma for me. I have gone without and have never had any problems with dependency w/d, though it does help with my body pain due to muscle spasms, etc from fibro and other illnesses. I have used Baclofen too and have never been affected adversely with soma regarding dependency. I've been clean from all narcotics for almost ten years, perhaps it's a psychological thing with me. I refuse to be addicted to anything ever again and I control what I have to take for my disorders.
Robert,
Who is your physician, may I ask? I am seeing Dr Papolla. He informed me that he is no longer able to rx soma. That was at my last visit at the beginning of this month. Has your doctor recently rx'd soma to you?
I know several drs who prescribe soma. Your dr is not telling you the truth if he says that drs can't prescribe soma. Unless he has personally done something that the law is preventing him from doing it himself he is mistaken. It is not an illegal drug for drs to prescribe. I know primary numerous primary care physicians, internists, several drs who prescribe soma for patients with back spasms from fibro and other problems.
And myself as well as other family members with different drs but similar illnesses as me receive soma prescriptions and as recently as within the last week.
good to know. If I don't get relief from the Barlofen I will talk to my niece's neurologist about it. I plan on switching to her anyway as the one I see has left me less than satisfied with his treatment. :(
Sometimes drs tell patients garbage like that just because they don't approve of a medication. It happens. I do know drs that won't prescribe soma or any benzo (just examples) and will not do it for anyone. They suffer from a God complex and think they have the choice to determine what is best for you whether you agree or not. I am the customer and will seek a second opinion if I disagree with a dr. I am like a walking PDR, not trying to brag, and I defy a dr to tell me that a medication is illegal when I know better.
Call your pharmacist-they know what's legal and availiable in your area. Again Soma availiability might be local. I live in a state that the FDA says has the highest rate of ODs from prescription drugs being out on the streets. The FDA is asking-rather harshly for Draconian measures. My HMO was the first to step in line for the FDA. The FDA can't even figure out cantaloupes and gave that farm and packing shed a clean bill of health 2 days before the first cantaloupe victim from listeria died in my state. Some times I say my coon hounds give 3 tail wags of approval-- The FDA personnel need to lie down and let my 80 lb Missy squat on their faces-marking them as IDIOTS-
Well guys I have several comments on this, as well as a few questions. First of all I totally agree with you about Soma being the best muscle relaxer and the only one that works for me. This is my quandry and I was wondering what y'all think about this. When I explained to my primary doc about my pain mgmt clinic taking all their patients off Soma he was perplexed. He has been my doc for 15 yrs and knows that I know my body and what works for me. He said that he would rx the Soma for me and just let the pm doc take care of the pain meds. Now if I go this route should I tell the pm doc that my primary is doing this. If I don't I guess he could dismiss me. As I've explained before the pm doc has had me on a medi-go-round with all the different muscle relaxers he's had me on these past 4 months. I finally just told him I wasn't doing it anymore so now I'm taking nothing for the HORRIBLE spasms.

I have an appt with my primary next week and I will probably get the prescription. I know honesty is the best policy but my pm doc has made it clear that he thinks Soma is the new devil. Any feedback or advice. I'm just so sick of hurting and not sleeping when there is something that I know will help.
Thanks and I didn't mean to babble on. You guys are the best. Hugs
Also Meyati what do you mean about your HMO stepping in line with the FDA? What are they doing?
terri
I would think if your regular doc is willing to rx you the soma, perhaps he will handle the pain aspect of it as well and you can just forget about the pm doc. Is that doable?
I sure hope it all works out for ya, my sweet friend.
Jillynnie
Hey Jilly - For some reason I didn't see your answer until today. I thought maybe it was because I asked such a stupid question and babbled on so.

I did ask my primary if he would just take over writing for all my meds but he wants me to continue going to the pm clinic since he has no expertise in pain mgmt. I know he probably just doesn't want to write a monthly rx for a narcotic. Also, my pm doc switched me from Oxycontin to Fentanyl patches on my last visit. I've only been on the patch for 2 weeks and that's been real fun (not) abruptly changing like that. I'm having all kinds of gastro problems but am hoping it's just an adjustment phase. The sad thing is I was doing fine with the combo I was on and hadn't had to adjust the dosage but once in over 3 years. But since he in his infinite wisdom won't rx Soma I've had months of agony that DID NOT have to happen. Robert was dead on in his reply about doctors and their "God complexes" but our only choices are do what they decide is best for us or find another dr. I have some major concerns about being on the patch too but that's a whole different question huh? Anyway thanks for being there and listening to my crap. I know I sound like a broken record. Your the best sweetie!!
Big hugs
Terri,
Broken record you are not! We ALL are either with you, or have been where you are now. That is a reason this group works so well. We can lend an ear, give personal experiences and offer support. NEVER feel you are saying too much. Sometimes we just need to get off of our chest what we've been feeling and going through. It is better to do so here than family at times because they DO seem to think that all we talk about is our pain. But, when we are suffering with it 24/7 it is sometimes hard to talk or think about anything else.
The adage: post, post, post... is true! It SO helps us all!!
Big hugs, sweetie!
