Was wondering if someone could tell me how long Oxycontin 20mg would be effective for your pain, (hours) and at what rate (mg's) does it dispense? Also, is oxycontin OP 20mg actually safer to take then oxycodone IR... say 10 mgs? Thanks to anyone who ttakes the time to answer.

Well I can say one thing oxycodone without tylenol is way safer.I was on vicoden 7.5/500mg tablets the ones with tylenol in it and they started to irritate my stomach BAD!!! So I asked my doctor if he could give me the same medication except with tylenol included. So he ended up prescribing me oxycodone 5mg tablets. So far i have not had anymore stomach pains but at times i feel like the vicoden still works better. Is that strange or is it a possiblitly that the vicoden is actually stronger even though statitics say that oxy is 1.5-2 times stronger??

It would actuly be safer to take the 10mg of oxy I.R than 20 of the sustained realease just because there's more drug in the 20mg. And according to the Purdue Fredric, the maker of oxycontin they are supposed to last 12hrs but most people I know who take them & myself who was on Morphine Sulfate Contin which is very similar, you only get about 6-8 hrs of pain relief but that tends to vary from person to person depending on factors like how long you've been on it & a persons metabolism. As far as the rate they dissolve that varys also but you could get an idea because they are supposed to last 12 hrs so I guess you could just take whatever mg your pill is & divide that by 12. Hope this helps.

I am taking the MS Contin 60mg, SR and it onlly lasts me about 5 hours on a good day, so my doctor prescribed it four times daily and I take Percocet 7.5mg/325mg in between for breakthrough pain. Because we each digest and metabolize our foods and meds differently, it really depends on your individual system, and body weight. I don't weigh very much, and it still does not last long, I only weigh 101lbs on a good day, I sometimes gain weight, and can get up to a whopping 110lbs. However whatever I eat, or take into my system, just run through me like a river. Take care, I don't know if this helps you much, I wish you luck though. God Bless.

I have suffered severe chronic pain since 2006 after I was involved in a "no fault" car accident. Over years of use and many different opiod based drugs prescribed by pain specialist those in my situation know we are on a cocktail of many pills. Our immune system becomes use to them and so the dosage becomes higher and higher. I got to a stage where I had no life as was just existing. My husband purchased a small 2 person sauna & spa which he helped me use daily. I was able to reduce from Oxycontin 80 mg twice per day, Oxynorm 20 mg also 3 x per day over a period of 3 long hard years down to Oxycontin 20 mg twice per day & Oxynorm 10 mg in the morning and I use for break through pain also. I was also prescribed Endep which had a side effect after long term use and am now seeing a Urologist for bladder problems. Also Mobic after 5 years of taking has also caused side effects. Because of the medications for years I slept 90% of the day.
I kept a journal to try and see what triggered or increased pain, but found on some bad days I had done nothing to aggravate pain at all. I have scars on my back from using heat packs also. For me the change in weather also has an effect on my pain. Is like my back has become a weather forecaster. I know its going to rain or change from hot to cold before the weather man does. My husband age 55 passed away almost 2 years ago from what they called pulmonary emboli he had for one day (it was medical negligence) nothing to do with my medications or pain but due to all the medication I was on and the continual sleeping & not being alert I lost 4 years of my time with him because I was like a zombie. The pain is cruel I know this very well but I urge you all to try sauna & spa as any pill we are prescribed is a band aid & will never cure us, just sedate us. I am still take Oxycontin 20 mg twice per day, 1 x oxynorm 10 mg when I wake and now use sauna & spa for breakthrough pain. I can smell the chemicals coming out of my body in the Sauna. I urge you all & I understand how very difficult it is but all these medications do shorten our lives & we will probably be on them for life but you CAN reduce them. I am still trying to reduce even more but as it is Winter pain has increased and specialist has advised me to increase meds again but I am determined that I will not. It has taken far too much to decrease them. People who do not suffer chronic pain or live with someone that does has NO understanding of what we go through every day
