Balsalazide is a prodrug. It is specially formulated to release mesalamine (asacol) directly to the lining of the colon where it is needed.
Each capsule of balsalazide is equivalent to 267 mg of mesalamine.
To get the equivalent dose of 1 Asacol capsule, 3 balsalazide capsules are needed.
So in answer to your question yes your husband is taking the equivalent dose of asacol.
