I am a 17 year old female and very active in sports and quite healthy. The only time i have ever seen signs of depression is when it was a result of my acne, otherwise no problem. Thanks to being active and eating healthy I haven't had any real health problems or anything that suggests diabetes as a problem, except for the relatives that have had it. I have tried everything with no results. Are the chances of me having bad side effects likely? If i do take it, what precautions should I take?
Anxiety/Depression has been in my family along with diabetes; should I risk taking Accutane?

This is my personal opinion but here goes. I HATE Accutane and wouldnt recommend it to anyone! We have some mild depression in our family here and there. I had two cousins, one on my moms side and the other on my fathers side who had never had any signs of depression until they started taking Accutane. They were both 17 when they commited suicide. The cousin on my moms side was first. He was an athlete too. Had just done well at State Wrestling Champs and had everything to live for-his whole life ahead of him. He became depressed quickly after starting accutane and finally ended up shooting himself in the chest down in his basement. His mother and father found him dead that evening. The gun he used was in pieces and he put it together to do the deed so it was no accident. My other cousin shot himself a year or two later. He even had seen all my family went through when my first cousin died but yet he still commited suicide after starting Accutane.

Hi DzooBaby,
I am so sorry about what you and your family has been through, and I do agree with you. I've heard about the crazy stuff about Accutane and I remember when they finally put the black box warning about the risk of suicide with that drug. I wouldn't give that stuff to my worst enemy. I would tell anybody if they suggest you take accutane, get a second, third fourth opinion. Take something else instead. That stuff just scares me.
Thank you for your kind thoughts! It was a really rough time and a sad loss of two wonderful young men! I am scared of this medicine too. I know that it has helped a lot of people but in a way I wish they would take it off the market. It is just too much risk if you ask me! I would never allow my children to use this medicine. There are other meds out there and I would try EVERY one of them before resorting to this one.
