Was going to use Bactine ... until I read these warnings.
What relief is safe for red, raw, bleeding, infected skin on dogs?
Antiseptic / pain reliever safe for dogs:?
Added 10 Mar 2010:
Thank you.
I run a rescue and foster home, and this poor Chihuahua had both Demodectic Mange and a Bacterial Infection.
My old first aid standby, Furacin, didn't seem to be helping.
I got him to the Vet on Monday.
Over the weekend, I was frantic, and went out and bought up everything that I thought was safe and effective.
With dogs, you have to be very careful, because they lick everything.
After more study, [fortunately], I was afraid to use anything new.
[The vet rejected most of it on Monday].
What could we find over the counter, on a weekend / when the Vet Clinic is closed; that would be safe and effective ???
Thanks,
Chuck

Furacin [sulphur & antiseptic in petroleum jelly compound] is an old standby horse Rx.
What I am searching for is some type of safe and effective anti itch pain remedy; preferably easy to apply [spray, etc.].
I had hoped that Bactine might be an answer; but am concerned about ingestion problems.
Also, some common remedies [cortisone, steroids, etc.] can't be used on Demodectic Mange.
Help! Please!
Thanks,
Chuck

Take the dog to the vet. If it just an acute thing, as opposed to an ongoing problem, a good old fashioned oat meal bath will soothe the skin. Make the oat meal (cooked in milk and cooled down) very soupy. The consistency of butter milk. Wet the dog down, massage the oat meal throughout the fur, let set for 20 mins. and rinse thoroughly. Make sure the dog cannot scratch or "bite" the affected area. You can also make a home made collar or put a cotton T-shirt on until it's healed. Good luck!

You should take the dog to a vet. But in the mean time, you can use vaseline SHORT TERM as long as the area is clean. This will sooth and act as a barrier to prevent further infection. It can be cleaned with damp cotton wool and salt water or hibiscrub, available from pharmacy.
Thank you.
Please see comments above.
