BCP can make your periods much lighter than you normally have had. Missing a pill by a few minutes or hours is no big deal, as long as you have taken a pill everyday. It is best to take them around the same time but a few hours one way or the other wont make much difference. Relax, you should be just fine.

Most pill manufacturers say you are protected after the first full week (seven days)of pills. When I worked family planning, we used to advise the women on birth control pills to use back up until they completed a full pack of pills. If you had completed the full course of the active pills, you should have been protected even though the condom broke during your inactive pills. The inactive pills are to stimulate a menstrual period but you are still protected at this time even though the pills do not contain active ingredients. Pills are about 98-99% effective when taken perfectly, meaning on time and every day. By using a condom with BCP's you increase the effectiveness even more, but you still should be well protected from pregnancy even if the condom breaks. One of the biggest things that can reduce effectiveness of the Pill is taking a course of antibiotics.

Antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of Pills so you need a back up method during the time you are on an antibiotic and for at least seven days after you finish the last antibiotic pill. Some women even get breakthrough bleeding while on antibiotics. Taking BCP's at the same time every day is optimal but as long as you take a pill each day you are protected. If you miss a pill, you should make it up as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next pill and you discover you have missed the day before's then you can take 2 pills at the same time but be sure to use a back up method for at least seven days or better yet, through the rest of the pack and a week into the new pack. If you miss more than a days pill, call your prescribing Dr or healthcare provider for instructions. Some have a schedule for making up pills and some may have you start over depending on how many pills you miss and what their protochol is but it is always best to contact them to tell you what to do. Taking BCP's can be a little nerve wracking in the beginning but you will get used to taking them and begin to be more confident in their ability to protect you from getting pregnant and how your body acts while on them. Pills are meant to keep us women from worrying about pregnancy so we can relax and enjoy our sex lives!! If you are very concerned you can always take an OTC pregnancy test.
