Finished high dosage of Penicillin 3 days ago but am still suffering severe pain in shoulders, arms, wrists and fingers with swelling in wrists/fingers. I've told doctors about this but they don't seem to take any notice. I haven't even been told what I'm suffering from but I suspect it's cellulitis from reading one of the blood test chits. Are these symptoms normal? How long do they last after treatment has stopped? I don't want to take pain-killers indefinitely.

A three week course of penicillin should have cured the cellulitis and you really shouldn't be having any further side effects. I would seek further medical attention for the pain and swelling if they continue. I don't think it is normal. I don't blame you for not wanting to take pain killers indefinitely. Please seek further medical care and demand answers to what they are treating you for. You have a right to know.

Your syptoms do not sound so good. Who diagnosed you with cellulitis? And did they tell you why you have it? My brother has chrontic cellulitus of his lower legs is why I wonder. He was on clindamyacin for his. It helped while he was on it, but now right back to where he was, all swelled up & weeping wounds. They tell him he has not only cellulitis, but vascular disease where he doesn't get enough blood flow to his legs. Just wondering what they told you about your problem. You should definaltely go back to your doctor or the ER, This is not normal... Mary632998

I would defintley go back and make sure you know what your diagnosis is. I had cellulitis and was in the hospital for a week and very sick for months after. I was on many powerful antibiotics so if the penicillian is not working you need to get back now. Cellulitis can get bad and deadly fast. Trust me. I have never been so sick in my life.

I'm grateful for answers to my question put in a couple of months ago. I'm only now almost back to normal. I think I got the problem from an insect bite when doing gardening in April but the redness didn't go away after a week and it was rather advanced when I got treatment. Extreme nerve pain to shoulder/arms/hands happened on second week of penicillin when dose was doubled. Doctor prescribed powerful pain relief but that upset my innards causing a different prob. So pain or no pain I stopped treatment. Anyway, good news is that after 10 weeks the right hand/arm/shoulder slowly started getting better. I only have pain in left shoulder and upper arm now which is bearable but stiffness and not much strength in left hand.
