- adderall, medication
I went to get my 20 mg of Adderall filled yesterday and 4-5 pharmacies told me this medication has been on "back order"and they are not sure when they will get more in stock. What is going on? Are the pharmacutecal (sp?) companies not making this drug anymore??? I did finally find one pharmacy that had it in stock but it is not the same pill I am used to taking (oval/orange tablet) this new one is pink and round. Has anyone every switched brands of adderall with minimal side effects?
Sorry for multiple questions. Guess I am panicing a little bit. I appreciate any feedback anyone has to share. Thank you.

I am not an Adderall patient, but I have heard of this. Have you noticed that many drugs, even OTC drugs have been on back order lately? I have. Where I live even Tylenol was unavailable several months. Imodium still is. And there are others. Don't expect your 20 mg of Adderall to be there next month. Btw, you probably got a different generic brand this month. Hopefully it will work the same. You can check any pill with the Pill Identifier tool here at DC. It's above in the Blue Bar.
Next month I suggest that before you go to your doc go to your pharmacy and ask what is available. Some people are being forced to take the extended release pills. So find out what is available. You may need more than 1 pill to make your total daily dosage. Just find out first, and then when you see your doc you can tell him all this. I'm sure he knows there's an Adderall shortage, although he may deny it. Just go to your doc with a solution to the problem, and let him write scripts for what you can get. And bring the name, address, and phone number of the pharmacy with you to the doc. He may ask you. Adderall is a highly abused drug. So do what you have to do to protect yourself and make sure it doesn't look like you're trying to pull something.

Yes I was told it was a manufacturing issue. I called shire and they said they only manufacture the extended release version and connected me to Barr Pharm who mfg the regular release adderall. I asked her if this was going to be an ongoing problem and she said yes but they are releasing the medication as it becomes available. That's real comforting to know because I have a college senior and a high school senior trying to function without their medication that they have been on for several years. I am ADHD also and I gave my boys my medication when they ran out hoping they would get some in at the drug store before they finished with what I had! So I have been without for 2 weeks and have been really struggling at work. I'm foggy, careless and very forgetful (just like I used to be)! I'm calling my doctor Monday AM to find some type of alternative, I can't afford to overdraw my checking account again because I forget to post checks and register deposits twice LOL AHHH the joys of attention deficit!

hi ironmaidn... i'm danni and i am new to this group... i have some answers for u, though i can't tell u when the shortage will be over and back orders will be sent... there are several reasons... there are some rumors flying, but working for a pharmaceutical company, i get answers from the FDA... the demand for adderall, both IR and XR, has exceeded the supply that was projected as accurate prior to 2011... also, i don't know if you have heard of Vyvanse, Shire's newest ADHD extended release drug, but it is being pushed very aggressively to replace Adderall XR... Shire no longer corners the market on ADHD meds since their patents expired on both IR and XR meds, so generic sales exploded the last few years (Teva/Barr, Sandoz, CorePharma all produce generic versions of the IR and XR formulas)...
it's super frustrating and being new to the drug (started 3 months ago), I started on 10 mg IR and dosed up to 20 mg... i was taking the Sandoz brand... on October 10 i had to call about 4-5 pharmacies before i found a Walgreen's to fill it for me... i received CorePharma brand 20 mg, they are pink... I took them for 2 days and had to stop... everyone is different and some generics work differently for people, but the throbbing headache was something i couldn't tolerate after 2 days, and switched to Adderall XR, which I have found to be a lot smoother than the IR... I am taking the Shire brand name, however, which I highly recommend if you are able to do this... I have a good Rx plan and brand name copay is $10 for me so it was a no-brainer to ask for the name brand...
the shortage isn't going away, and the common element i am finding in updates is that shortage is likely til 1st quarter 2012... IR is being allocated as it become available according to the FDA, however, they haven't updated the page since July... call as many pharmacies as u can but if u can't find IR, u may want to ask your doctor for XR 20mg... it's a great substitute if you want to continue taking adderall before the shortage is over and you can find the IR that you want.
P.S. Look up Vyvanse when you get a chance... it's another option... I've discussed it with my doctor and might try it if the shortage gets worse...
