Medications for Succinic Semialdehyde Dehydrogenase Deficiency

Succinic Semialdehyde Dehydrogenase (SSADH) Deficiency is a genetic metabolic disorder characterized by reduced activity of the SSADH enzyme which breaks down GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter. This leads to an accumulation of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) which is thought to be a neurotransmitter. There is a great variation of symptoms and can include delays of gross and fine motor skill development, mental development and speech and language development. Other symptoms include seizures, behavior problems, diminished muscle tone, and ataxia.
