Medications for Pterygium

A pterygium is a benign (non-cancerous) growth on the surface of the white part of the eye, that slowly appears over time.  It is a triangle or wedge shaped growth that is relatively harmless although if left untreated can extend onto the cornea of the eye and may affect vision. The pterygium may cause the sensation that there is something in the eye as it may feel irritated, inflamed or dry.

Causes of pterygium include long-term exposure to ultra-violet light therefore people who work outdoors or play a lot of outdoor sports are at a greater risk.  Another factor for developing a pterygium is being regularly exposed to environmental irritants such as wind, chemicals, dust and air pollution.

To reduce the risk of developing a pterygium it is important to wear UV protectant sunglasses to protect your eyes from sunlight and also dust and wind.  If your eyes become dry in these conditions it is recommended to use lubricating eyes to moisten and soothe your eyes.

Treatment of a pterygium:

  • lubricating eye drops - used to relieve the symptoms of dryness and irritation
  • steriod eye drops - may be used if the eye is particularly irritated and swollen
  • surgery to remove the pterygium - this may be an option if the pterygium has begun to affect vision.
