Medications for Aspergillosis, Meningitis with 5-FC

Aspergillosis is a broad term used to describe an infection caused by a fungus (Aspergillus). Rarely meningitis can be caused by a fungus and is more likely to occur in people who have compromised immune systems, such as AIDS patients who patients receiving cancer treatment. Patients diagnosed with fungal meningitis may be prescribed 5-FC (flucytosine). Once inside a fungal cell 5-FC is converted into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which is further converted to metabolites that inhibit fungal RNA and DNA synthesis.
