What does it mean when your stool is black? With bowel movments twice a day I only see black stool after I exercise sometimes or out of the blue some days. I take seroquel xr and a vitamen d supplement.

Stool color is generally influenced by what you eat as well as by the amount of bile, a yellow-green fluid that digests fats, in your stool. As bile pigments travel through your gastrointestinal tract, they are chemically altered by enzymes, changing the pigments from green to brown.
Eating black licorice, lead, iron pills, bismuth medicines like Pepto-Bismol, or blueberries can cause black stools.
Black stool usually means that blood is coming from the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract.
You should seek medical attention if this is the case.

You are so right about the Bepto - it can also make your tongue black. Scared me when that happened. However, black stool on a regular basis is feinitrly something that needs to be explored.

For me, black stools meant I had internal bleeding. When my BP went down to 72/22, I was taken to the hospital. My hiatus hernia had numerous ulcers around it and caused me to lose 3/4 of my blood. That’s the way the blood passed.

Hi, King! Try not to waste time worrying about it ~ it accomplishes nothing ~ and being humans of course we dwell on the worst case scenarios. As the others have said, it could be blood in the stool, but there are so many other possible causes. Call your doctor's office and find out what you need to do ~ make an appointment if they think you should. Chances are you'll find out it's nothing or nothing serious, and that's that. If, by some chance, it needs to be investigated further, you'll get a jump start on whatever needs to done.

I have no stomach pains but I do have gas I did some research on it all day black could mean colon cancer but its rare in people my age I'm 20 years old male and on same rare cuases it says seroquel can cases black tarry stools I'm scared becuase I only consider the worst most times when no cancer is a possibility at so young

Dear Kingdoctor 20= So, you found that possibly one of your meds can cause the black stool?? That is good news. I was your age when I 1st got sick. Took over a year and a half b4 I got a diagnosis. Not trying to scare you, just sharing my "stuff". You have so much life ahead of you, it is never too early to take a good look at your health and stay on top of anything that pops up.

Black stool is usually a sign of old blood. It can also be caused by drinking dark colored drinks like blue or purple Gatorade. This is from personal experience and what I was told by my doctor. It could be a number of things. Are you having any other stomach problems? Pain or heartburn? It is always best to get checked out by your doctor of course.
